Re: Batten down the hatches
We left the East Algarve at 9.30 this morning, and had no problem getting home. Looked ominous a few times, but once we were home, the heavens opened and we have tables and chairs blown over, had to fish some cushions out of the pool and now all is calm.
Driving down on Tuesday afternoon, the heavens opened and we were down to 30kph for about 5 minutes, visibility was so bad.

Re: Batten down the hatches
We've had some wind but only a little rain.
We need a lot of rain!!
25 years ago I bought a large Dutch barge with hatches over the cargo hold; they were covered by a tarpaulin, which was held down by batons and wedges at the edges.
So I have actually, literally, "battened down the hatches" before a storm.

Re: Batten down the hatches
I clearly remember a mini hurricane while staying in a holiday apartment in Corveiro!
Our neighbours hadn't secured their shutters and we were woken by a loud bang at 3 in the morning to see that their shutter had lost all its slats, we had to use a scarf to secure the flapping shutter, a little later there was another crash - the gutter had come down onto the balcony!

We've had about 5 inches of rain and gale force winds, lost some plastic cladding which I think is somewhere about 300m away in the orchard, and one of the shutters bashed itself off its hinges and pulled the balcony handrail bolts out.
Discovered that the roof isn't 100% water tight when the wind blows the rain a certain direction too.

Better get used to some more, although must admit tother day was a 15min horizontal gale sprung up from nowhere and disappeared just as quickly.
Looks like due to hit Algarve sometime early Sunday morning, looks a bit more rain !!!
