But it was still stopped.
The BBC has started limiting access to I player and will no doubt introduce further restrictions.
Every few years Sky introduces new cards and boxes and we can expect that these too wili limit general access.
There is too much money to be made from subscriptions and the costs of productions have to to be met by someone.

Portuguese ISPS have declared war on this , hardly surprising that they also sell tv services so do have a vested interest. The see the cable cutting momentum that happened over the last 4 years or so in America , and dont want it repeated. But you cant blame USA folk , after all google the cable companies trying to kill legal streaming - ie netflix.
Havent used my kodi stuff in a while , but I had checked with a client whom bought a legal media box , its then up to them what they put on it , and he had confirmed that back in July the isps have created a live kill list of web adddresses , ie hosts , compiled from the relative govt agencies as well as their own servers data to create it. Its then added to the block list , the uk operates a similar situation with torrent sites , but as of yet does not block beyond the legal minimum , so is circumventable with some reading. I do think though that piracy of this sort of thing is being attacked on many fronts , even from hacking groups via site popups for ransomware installs.
Kodi , formerly a load of coders for the microsoft xbox creating software to run on CHIPPED consoles , in order to run media operations as unsigned ocde like downloaded music , video etc or even ones own content. They have recently jumped ship , as the interest to legitimise which was once a nfp group has reared its head , money talks.
However to blame kodi is like blaming BT for supplying the internet , or Samsung for making the telly , or intel for supplying the chip in the computer. The pirate tv and movie aspect has nothing to do with KODI developers "now" , and is supplied by *for lack of an easier explanation" "little apps" that do the mining and directing - then the streaming to local hardware as a result.
There is still ways to get something approaching what many expats may want , and given the recent jail terms for the Uk pirates , where something may be a little more secure.
VPN
KODI , with some workarounds , or Mobdpro android only at present
Job done , the first item is the most important.

I'm sure I read a while ago that Sky had no right to limit usage to uk/Ireland & that you should be able to watch Sky in the EU if you were a fully legal subscriber but nobody would challenge Sky due to the high cost in legal fees etc & Sky being able to throw unlimited funds at the case.

Hi, just reading through this item, I wanted to ask something ... At the moment I have a laptop with Express VPN on it. Just recently bought a Android TV box and wanted to add that to my Express VPS subscription. Now I discovered that they (express vpn) do not do TV boxes ? Is there another solution to this, bearing in mind I do not want another vpn subscription. (can cancel express though and maybe subscribe to another one) ?
Warning : I am a computer dummy, so plain English (or French or German or Dutch or Flemish) will do.
Thanks

IT was EU legislation that meant the overspill had to be limited , in that the signal was over countries affecting their radio spectrum , but also combined with programme licencing , more so with unencrypted channels in that respect though.
The licencing is the main reason why Sky have never offered a legal expat service , not eu legislation. The programme makers licence a programme to a geo terroitory , in the case of SKY this is the UK only , but with SKy italy and Germany they also need further licences - so essentially paying for the same programme thrice..... so if you add in Spain , Portugal , France , expats , then you see why it then becomes uneconomical to offer the services.
Of course back in the pre digital days , with rebroadcasters , their customers thought there was money to be made by sky offering a legal service , however the pirate re broadcasters never had the licence overheads of paying for geo licences on a per programme basis.
You would have thought though that SKY would have and could have found a way to convince the copyright holders to include EU encrypted broadcast for expats with a premium , but then comes the problems of where to pay the tax? So more legal costs as a result.

Thanks for your info. I will try to get my head around this one. Mind you, I only have this box to occasionaly watch some old series when there is nothing on the French tele ... and am fed up with connecting the laptop to the tv to do so. I assume for that I don't need a VPN on the Kodi box ?
But thanks again.

But not all routers are created equal , ie dont have a setting for vpn.
Just to be sure , before you start to change settings in the router , backup its bin file(rom) , or check its factory restore method. Take a pic of all the settings on your phone , or old school use a pen and paper , that way if you need to change routers you have all the important settings to hand.
Another way to do such a thing is more complicated , but easy if you have fast internet both in the UK and anywhere in the world , assuming you also live there , or have a decent relative. This involves using a normal sky or compatible freeview box , a slingbox , and a sim enabled powesocket for reboots... basically a personal version of the old rebroadcasting without the expense. This may be something for some to research further in said position.

Once the settings are in a router , there is no need to mess with anything else , kodi , netflix , bbc , unless the other end blocks the ip address knowing its a vpn - but that is rare for paid for services.
