For info:
Our transponder never beeps, but our journeys ARE starting to show on the Via Verde website (about 5 days after we drive under), AND they are showing as free thanks to the positive discrimination thingy.

I hesitate to say it because I love Portugal and try to accept its foibles, but as far as this road payment goes beeping and not beeping is about par for the b***s up. We came in from Spain yesterday and a normal sign says "Electronic Toll - Toll Electronica" What's that supposed to mean to a person who has just driven from northern europe?

Yes, now that it's been running for a couple of weeks, does anyone know what the procedure is for a Brit arriving in Portugal, having driven down from the UK, arriving on a Sunday? Is there ANY way of paying the toll "as you go"? Can you rent a transponder for the duration of a stay?

See http://www.ctt.pt/fectt/wcmservlet/c...o_virtual.html for one way or possibly http://www.ctt.pt/fectt/wcmservlet/c...definidos.html for another way to manage your arrival and perhaps http://www.ctt.pt/fectt/wcmservlet/c...emporario.html if you're staying for an appropriate period and intending to use electronic toll roads regularly.

Midnight-ish last night between Portimao and Moncarapacho we passed just 6 cars and 4 of them were GNR cars manning gantries, the tolls can't be making a lot so far!

If they speak good English and have a good knowledge of ALL the options that looks like a good place to do the research and transaction. It was said earlier to be "not permanent" so best to get along there sharpish.

Perhaps they had intelligence about raids on the gantries and were there to forestall any damage and injury.

We've been on the motorway most nights in the last week (airport runs for relatives visiting :-) and the GNR seem to be a permanent fixture on the gantries after dark.
Have only had the transponder about a week and we've nearly used up all our free trips!
