Greetings all,

Quick up-date. We have had a spate of burglaries around here...the first since I moved here 7 months ago. We were out all day yesterday and as usual gf father comes around regularly to keep an eye on our house. On one visit, he saw someone eyeing the place. He and his brother then sat outside during the hours of darkness to keep guard. The joys of having a family close by I guess.

Think I should point out that I have never felt unsafe here. The locals all greet me with a smile and a nod and the kids wave and give high fives. It is my gf who felt unsafe... not me. As most of you have read on my Sipalay thread I think she is a bit highly strung and it is my responsibility to calm her fears. I have done that now She appreciates my care and is now happy. So is her family. Ok, it might feel like Gulag 15 sometimes but as an ex-serviceman, I am used to that. Hopefully, I may not need to add further to this thread.

The village where I live has lately been hit by a spate of break-ins over the last few weeks, ranging from the disappearance of a few bottles of Tanduay to P60K. All break-ins were at houses that did not have dogs. Even if you do not like/trust local dogs, they are fiercely protective of their supper and those who give it to them. My dogs still will not let the girl in who does the washing without lots of noise and gnashing of teeth and she has been doing the washing for the last 18 months.

Great post yesterday,Stokkevn! What was the name of that band in the 90s?....."Everything but the Girl". These security precautions could be described as "Everything but the dog"! Close to a "no brainer" or is one in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. As I have previously explained, I feel no threat and never have. It is just a case of taking the normal precautions when living in places like the Philippines. However, she felt unsafe and I undertook the precautions she wanted. She now feels safe and happy and that was my aim. She does not like dogs and does not want one. Now, if I felt unsafe or threatened, then I would keep one. Or a pack.

Went to a party of a local friend this weekend, he has kept on at me for ages to get CCTV, motion sensors, floodlights, gun, etc to keep me safe, he had all these systems. When we were round there I noticed that he did not have the monitors on. Sheepishly he explained that someone had stolen his CCTV cameras, motion sensors & floodlights. He has now bought himself a Rottweiler which is frightened of mice and frogs and its best friend is a feral cat.

Festive greetings and salutations!

Thought I would do a small up date on this for what it is worth. Security wise all seems well. In other words we have not been robbed or attacked etc. I think she is still paranoid about security in that if we have to walk in the evening then I am instructed to get the pepper spray out of my pocket at the ready. To save a Pinay pout (refer to Sipalay thread) I do as commanded. We did have a robbery nearby (nearby = 4kms away) where the house had its iron security bars removed during the night whilst the occupants were asleep. To be honest, I am not sure how that can be done without awakening the occupants. Unless, they were tampered with over a few nights. But I check the exterior of the house every day for any suspicious signs. She reckons they used a "medicine" which they somehow administered into the bedroom to keep the occupants asleep. However, this has resulted in her keeping the bedroom windows closed 24/7 which is annoying because it gets hot as an oven in there during the day and that is where I change after a shower. Once changed in the oven...I need another shower. No matter how I explain that whatever "medicine" is administered during the day (we are in most of the time) it would have dissipated by the time we go to bed. However, when life gets a little boring, or I am in need of adventure....I do open the windows.

Apart from that....all is good. I am considering putting a sign outside the gate marked "Colditz"

Its much more fun in the Philippines!
