Default Kids - Points for Pera

Over the last few years I have operated a "Points for Money" with a few kids ( 8 to 12 year olds ) that I think are smart but need encouragement to do well at school. I give money for their term card points per subject ( local school has 5 main subjects ). If they get between 80>85 they get P20 up to P350 for over 95 points per term. If they actually spend this on school items I will go 50/50 on what they buy.

OK there will always be a few drop outs but in general ( excluding the drop outs ) the improvement over time has been quite marked. I still have to impress that buying school related items is better than candy but some have worked it out, most likely by charging Dad the full amount of the receipt and pocketing my half - but maybe there is the next finance minister

Does anyone else have anything similar going on in their areas.

That sounds like an excellent scheme. We sponsor the village basketball team shirts. A few weeks ago we had a great chat with a mid 20's school teacher living in the village and doing a distance learning Masters degree with a UK University. He has just started a group for our village teenagers, of which we personally have two, to get involved in creating activities for villagers. An idea we had was running some form of basic educational 'boost' during holidays/weekends but it seemed a little daunting. Perhaps your idea may work better.

A great and novel idea Stokkevn....never heard of that worthwhile scheme before.

This reminds me of an article I saw on another group which gives an insight how the school system works. Cannot vouch for the veracity of this but its interesting nonetheless.

When a pupil is marked in an exam, the minimum mark he will get is 75/100. Even if he only gets one question out of 20 correct. A pupil getting 20 out of 20 will get 99/100. Apparently 100/100 is not recognized for some reason. Schools are encouraged to get higher marks each year entitling them to increased funding. Miraculously they all do. Pupils can achieve higher marks....not by academic study, but by giving their teachers little gifts.

I am not convinced that the education system (based on this story) here in the Phils produces the best education results. But, perhaps it does.

Regards
