If you work in the public hospitals, you can do a thing called Salary Sacrifice - if you pay rent or a mortgage you can avoid tax on $9000+ per year of your earnings.
My wife is orthopaedic [now doing project work] and prefers working in a public hospital. Also it may be that the public hospital will offer a PR visa whilst the private won't - if you can get it a PR is to be preferred always.

It is worth it - basically you avoid tax on $9000+ of your income per year for the rent/mortgage component. You basically get paid twice in 3 days - Day 1 is your pay calculated as pay less the sacrifice component [about $350 dollars] then tax deducted and then 2 days later you get the $350 back again. All numbers are approx as I don't have them to hand.
