Just started a new job today, and was explained by HR that we don't qualify for annual leave until 12 months service. Can this be true? Is this the same for everyone or is it this particular organisation? Can't imagine not taking a day off in 12 months, surely staff will experience burn out before this, particularly in this profession.

not true for me, although you cant take annual leave until it is accumulated (it usually tells you in your pay packed how much your have accumulated and how much sick time you also have accumulated).

I have changed jobs twice here, and working agency , so therfore have basically accumulated zilch, come end of april, i will have worked a year (albeit part-time, most of the time), without time off as i cant afford to take unpaid leave, however this is my own fault coz i just cant seem to find a hospital here i want to work in consistantly.

Margaret is correct. You need to accumulate your annual eave before you can take it. For most fulltime roles, this is around 1.6 to 1.9 days per month.

Are you sure they aren't talking about annual leave loading? That doesn't have to paid until your first year anniversary and is usually about 17% of your normal rate of pay.

yep we have been told similar cant take it until you earnt it so have to work almost 3 months to get a week off etc. getting seriously pissed off:curse:

Annual leave has to be accrued. It's 2.923 hours per week for a full time employee. This entitles you to 4 weeks a year. If you are a shift worker you are entitled to an extra week. Leave loading is added as well. This is all in WA not to sure about anywhere else.

Queensland Health is similar but it's 6 weeks a year for shift workers and 5 weeks for everyone else, all annual leave and sick pay that's been acrued is displayed on the payslip each fortnight/

Couple questions (since I'm not in Australia). For Nurses/public sector in general in the Northern Territory, it says 6 weeks paid leave starting. After 10 years, it says 3 months "long service leave". Does that mean it's basically a one time 3 month amount of leave after 10 years (and subsequent 10 years)? And what exactly is leave loading??? Thanks in advance

Yep, after 10 years service you are entitled to an extra 3 months holidays as a one off but you get it again every 7 after that
Leave loading is your average penalties that are paid while on holidays so you dont loose out on shift penalties,
