Why NZ?

Why NZ?
We are the minority, ever looked at the viewing figs NZ v OZ? Right now we are 35...they are 215 or thereabouts.
I find it amazing (I know some think its obvious, crap wages, poor housing, damp, cold etc etc!!) that NZ is so less enticing than Oz.
We went for NZ as I can't stand silly heat, I think a trip to Wellington is big bananas (2hrs) and Oz is so mind blowingly huge it would seriously phase me. I went there 15years ago for a drive about on the East coast..loved it, but its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hot for me. Kate has an aversion to nasty creepy crawlies AND SNAKES!!!! I am scared shitless of sharks, pathetic or otherwise..don't think I could get in the salty stuff these days.
We are very happy with NZ and believe we made the right choice. I know some jump ship and go west to OZ.
So why did you go for little old NZ then and not Oz???????

Re: Why NZ?
MrsL and LardyMkII hate spiders, MkIII is more like me (only 22 months mind) so would probably be OK. However, it is too hot for me and I wanted to be able to work for the govt. agencies in my field - if I went to OZ I'd probably have to be a sworn police officer for 2 years before specialising (in something I have been doing for 13yrs!!).............

More or less the same reasons as you Gen.
We are more for a quieter and slower life - suits us. We don't like too packed, too busy etc...... But would definitely like to visit OZ for a holiday.

It had to be New Zealand for us as I never ever wanted to go to the USA or Canada.
It had to be an English speaking nation so we could qualify for employment.
The Steve and the girl are terrified of spiders. In fact, the Steve said: 'you never hear of any mass murders in NZ; you never hear of any bush fires; you don't have any native poisonous beasties'
That's it then!
So far, we are delighted

Re: Why NZ?
Probably the same as many others - too old, over 45 !!
Also i wanted to see the long-lost rellies here !
I guess i would have preferred Oz - less taxes, bigger salaries, warmer, but have no regrets

But there are "white tail spiders" in NZ that are from Oz. Had loads of the blighters in our house. Can give you a nasty bite they can. Still never seen any snakes though.

Haven't seen anything here so far in the 'beastie' stakes that has the pair of them waiting at the airport
I would like some half-way decent buildings and some culture but I am a beach bum at heart (pity it is an hour away!) so we can do this!

Re: Why NZ?
Just got back from Perth - bloody freezing and blowing a hooly, nice and warm in Chch (for Autumn/Winter) - 15°, not much snow on the Alps, hardly any rain in the last month.
Horrendous prices in Perth - the most expensive beer in OZ ($7.5 for a pint of Carlton Draught in the Como!) and property prices extortionate. Taxes coming out of your ears. No rugby on the telly. Can't swim in the sea cos of the Nobbies. Can't smoke at the airport! Got to take your laptop out at security. In Chch you don't even have to go through security if you're flying on one of the ATRs to Welly!
Why NZ? - It's bliss

Ha ha - another reason not to go to Oz - the World Record Holders for mass murder (35) by a lone gunman, Port Arthur 96.

NZ embodies everything I want in a place to bring up my daughter. Unfortunately hubby now wants to stay put near Chicago. Not sure what's going to happen now...
