AKL is the most expensive place to stay in NZ (about 25% more for motels than the rest of NZ) but the airport motels are reasonable enough.

Don't know if you want to be slap bang the the middle of things, but the Carlton Hotel on Mayoral Drive (just off the main thoroughfare, Queen Street) is doing pretty good online deals at the mo. I've booked in for a couple of nights as part of my travel plans home to the UK-it's $135 per night if you book online. For a motel, you are looking at roughly anywhere between $90-$200 per night. Like anywhere in the world, you get what you pay for and obviously, the closer to the city or in more popular suburbs, you will pay more for. It's difficult to advise you really because you haven't said what you are planning to do in those first 2 days. Rest, I would have thought would be a the top of your agenda following the long haul flight. It is a killer!!! The other thing, when are you actually flying out here? Remember the Lions tour commences in June and from what I've read and heard, most accommodation is pretty well sold out in Auckland.

We stayed at the Sebel Suites in the Viaduct Basin, not cheap, but right in the heart of things, and I highly recommend, we couldn't fault them.

There are lots of places to stay. Depends on how much you want to pay. Do you want something for kids too. Something that has cooking facilities or restaurant, near shops, Do you just want to blob out or see some sights etc etc.

Do not know anything about hotel costs in NZ I would have thought around 150 a night.

Here are some links to accomodation: There are some advertised from $99 upwards.
Friends MIL has a BB Loft room for $120 a night including breakfast, they would probably pick you up from airport and back again. It is in east auck about 30 mins from auck airport and by the beach.

If you leave it until just before you leave there is a cool website - www.wotif.co.nz - they put all hotel deals on there - great ones too, but the draw back is its only for up to 2 weeks in advance. We got a penthouse suite in AKL for $180 when we visited for a girls weekend away - definately worth a look!
