Re: Want to move to Aus ?
I think that is not true. But no doubt the numbers in both Oz and NZ are growing every year.
Tariana Turia has even accused the NZ govt of having such high immigration rates to keep the Maori population at about 20% of the total.
The truth is that Maori leave in the same numbers as other NZers.

And yes you can live cheap - but living in a tent with a family is no life

Re: Want to move to Aus ?
It's interesting you say that.
I was looking at offers in Kununurra and Gladstone and decided on Gladstone for that reason. While the West Australia job offered more, a decent place to live in Kununurra was about $1200 per week compared to $300 for Gladstone.
Also, when I was on holiday staying in Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria a lot of the people were from Mount Isa. Apparently a flat costs about $500 a week there and the people I spoke to were seriously considering moving to a campsite and living in a tent - I kid you not!
The moral of the story seems to be to live in a mining camp and get your bed and board paid by the company.

For young single guys/girls the money is great if you can live "rough" or resist the urge to drink it
But my point is for those with families. We in particular found it difficult to "retain" staff - after the initial honeymoon period of living with triple or even quadruple their earnings the endless suffering (in terms of quality of life) and high costs made them reconsider.
Cannot comment on WA.
Just bear these thoughts in mind if you get an offer or the opportunity. It may well work out for you and good lucky to those who do.

Yep - my husband's nephew is building houses for the mining workers and apart from ending up in hospital when he went over first, from heat exhaustion, he now goes to Perth once a month. That's his social life. There's no 'life' as such - he's only there for the cash. It's a young man's game.

If your talking to him gets him to ask just one question that might make a difference then it'll be worth it.

Re: Want to move to Aus ?
Regarding the original post, there are many places in the world that are very remote like New Zealand, but these places do not lose 10% of their local population. If they did something world be done about it ! How many Icelanders living in a cold icey country leave, or Perth , or .... ? The answer .... HARDLY ANY !!!!!!!
The taxes are far far too high here, and houses too expensive. 4 million people would fit in 70-80 rugby fields, so why is land so expensive, why is no land freed up for housing ? What does the government DO with all these taxes , in a sparsely populated country ?
As long as the high number of politicians receive their bloated expense accounts, nothing will change.
But thousands of Kiwis are leaving for Oz and nothing is being done, as long as low cost replacements can be found, increasingly from developing countries India, China not Britain anymore.
The trickle towards Oz is becoming a flood

As for the rest of our taxes - why was there $9bn in the coffers last year? They didn't know how to spend it wisely so they were afraid to touch it at all.

Well, there's been a huge increase in the civil service since Aunty Helen came into power. There's been 12,000+ since 2002 alone and bringing up the 4 million figure again - that's a huge number of people out of such a small population. New Zealand needs to be run as a business - again because of the small population - and there just are no proper economists in this Government.

Pity about NZ though, and vast numbers emigrating from a former top emigrant destination, people are not stupid and will always vote with their feet be they from East Berlin, Mexico, Auckland or wherever

Re: Want to move to Aus ?
Seem as how the thread has turned to NZ, it might add a bit of balance to say that the vast majority of immigrants to this country do stay.

Read your newspaper u will find it says otherwise. If they make it any easier to emigrate they will be paying people next. Two years and the country will be on its arse trust me.
