Default UK Qualified CCP ( Critical Care Paramedic) looking to come to NZ

Hi

My wife and I are hoping to come to work in NZ either for a couple of years or permanently. We are looking to make her the primary applicant as she is a CCP in the UK , a Critical Care Paramedic. I believe this standard of advanced Paramedic Qualification originated in NZ

My questions ,
  1. does she apply for Paramedic jobs before getting her qualifications verified , or afterwards?
  2. Where is the best place online to look for paramedic jobs ?
  3. Do Critical Care (advanced) Paramedics stand a better chance of finding work in NZ ?
  4. any other advice ?? would love to hear a success story from someone who's transferred from the UK to NZ and is now working / living there

Thanks ! Newbies Ian + Sarah

HI Ian & Sarah and welcome to BE

firstly Critical Care nurse or Intensive Care paramedic are only on the skill level class. this means you would need to get a job offer (from an accredited company) and obtain points over 160 on the points calculator and a certain level of salary to allow you both to come over. I believe your degrees would need to be assessed and you would need to be registered with the nursing board to allow you to work.
Distric Health Boards are accredited so you would be looking at approaching them for jobs. but as I say you would need registration and be able to pass the IELTS tests. (International English Language Testing System)

Morning from New Zealand.

I'll just post up a few basics. You come back to us all with thoughts etc.

The nationwide ambulance service here is run by the St Johns charity.
For Wellington there is the Wellington Free Ambulance service.
Land / urban search and rescue is a volunteer organisation.
There are assorted rescue helicopter services kept running through donations. The paramedics for this is still St Johns.

I have checked the NZ Immigration shortages lists and paramedics are not in shortage here in NZ. Critical care or otherwise. TBH this doesn't surprise me as I was given to believe that there is a wait queue to enter this service.
My husband volunteers for urban search and rescue so hears about these things.

I do remembers a long time ago that a paramedic did secure a job offer with the Wellington Free Ambulance service but that was years ago.

Your first port of call before anything else is to contact St John and Wellington Free Ambulance to ask about possible employment openings.

There are other services dotted about but those are the main ones.

Please come back to us.

If Paramedic is not on the skills shortage list
I guess this means she would need to apply as a skilled migrant in the same way that I would then ? (I’m an IT service delivery manager, also not on the shortage list )

I’m assuming this means she would therefore only get a job offer if a NZ paramedic was unavailable? That outcome doesn’t seem very likely given the waiting list you have mentioned for paramedic jobs.

i have contacted St. John’s and WFA as you suggest many thanks for the advice 🙂

I imagine it could be quite tricky to secure a paid job as a Paramedic, as majority of services here rely upon volunteers.

Most regions would have an air ambulance service such as the Auckland Helicopter Rescue which might be another avenue to try: https://www.rescuehelicopter.org.nz/ (Sorry I have no idea if they have people on payroll - they possibly rely on volunteers too.

Or that there was no-one that could be trained up for the vacancy.

Much depends on funding of course, just like anywhere. If she has exceptional expertise , perhaps in a specialised area, then that would push her up the ranks so to speak as she would be bringing in something that is not available already in NZ.

My husband volunteers for Urban Search and Rescue. It is all volunteer. The Nelson/Tasman region had one unit however recently and probably because of the large 'events' the past few years , funding became available for another one or two units. Now that is for volunteers but it does show an awareness that perhaps services needed more people.

IMO your wife needs to contact anywhere and everywhere that may use paramedics.

Hi
as a CCP she’s definitely got a more extensive skill set as she’s specially trained in areas such as severe trauma and cardiac arrest .
Agree that covering all the areas for paramedic roles is best approach
can anyone recommend a good search tool online or medical job search ?
Thanks all for the help

Usual job sites :-

www.seek.co.nz
www.trademe.co.nz
https://nz.indeed.com

If you're looking for health sector jobs you also need to check out each individual DHB (District Health Board) careers site.

Unlikely you'll find any ambulance / paramedic roles in the above. As has been mentioned, there are only two service providers across NZ - St John New Zealand who covers 90% of the country and Wellington Free Ambulance which just looks after Wellington and surrounds. Both services have their own careers pages on their websites.
https://www.stjohn.org.nz/
Jobs here
https://join.stjohn.org.nz/search
Also have a look at this
https://join.stjohn.org.nz/immigrating-to-nz

Home
Jobs here
Careers

Seems there's a few opportunities with St. John.
At the moment, paramedics don't currently have to be registered in NZ unlike doctors, nurses, midwives etc, BUT National Registration is on the cards and likely in the future.
See this article https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-...lves-paramedic
Have a look at this Ambulance NZ | Ambulance New Zealand Download the appraisal form etc as that explains more about the service in NZ and have a look at what is written here as it's all about registration/regulation Registration | Ambulance New Zealand

Just a thought - have you looked at the job situation in Australia?

You can live study and work in NZ so long as you hold permanent residency of AUS. You don't have to be an AUS citizen. On entry to NZ you will be given NZ Resident Visa with immediate expiry should you leave.
it is different the other way around. To live study and work in AUS from NZ you must be an NZ citizen.

No idea how your job prospects would look in AUS. May be a question to ask in the AUS forum.
