Is there ski resorts on the north island?.
We fancy the South island as it offers great snowboarding/sking but im getting some real good job invitations to go to Wellington and Auckland. How does the north island compare to the south as per activities such as snowboarding and other activities?
Thanks all.

You will find the central North Island to your liking. I believe Whakapapa is the big one and there is Turoa as well in roughly the same area. Plenty of snow during winter.

Hi Wessa
I've skied in Whakapapa (many years ago) it was good. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

They're the big 2, but you've also got Tukino round the corner as well as Manganui in the Taranaki (and of course Snow Planet in Dorkland)

Yes there are but having skied both Whakapapa & Turoa this past season we will not be going back next year. We're planning on going to the S.Island to ski in future. The unreliability of the snow at Ruapehu is the problem especially if you're going up from Wellington (or down from Auckland) for the weekend. If you've enjoyed European skiing don't imagine it is like that here! Main difference is that it isn't resort skiing; most accommodation is some distance away and you have to drive to get to the ski fields so there is none of that 'ski to the door', stuff. Apres ski suffers consequently.
Whilst skiing in Queenstown & Wanaka still means a 45 min transfer to the ski fields every day at least the towns have more to offer in terms of night life, restaurants and activities for the non-skiers. Ohakune is a bit of a disappointment considering Ruapehu is the N.Islands ski place. I wish someone had managed our expectations with regards to skiing in NZ because we're now missing the alpine skiing of Europe......!!!!
