Fair enough for your point spoony but maybe there should be some stats on which governments are the best at massaging of stats and truth.

Obviously the labour government of the uk supplies completly accurate stats and never puts a spin on crime figures

Just as an example the government now treats its accurate crime figures as those from the crime 'survey' where they go out and ask people of their perception of crime. Its very little suprise that they seem to ask the right people as the Police 'recorded' actual crime figures are getting further and further away, in the wrong direction, in nearly all catergories, from the Government favoured way of day dreaming that crime is being tackled in the UK.

Hah there is a whole team dedicated to checking up the UK and Germany

Also with crime stats we have to be careful to account for corruption. Less corruption leads to higher rate of reported crimes.

Surely the police record 'all' crime that happens in their area don't they??

I'm sure hours of conversation could be done on this subject...........lol

I believe all statistics given out by our Goverment

I believe we should all double lock our doors, have CCTV installed on every street corner, install Speed cameras on every mile of road, Charge every parent who is trying to bring there children up not by what the goverment says with child abuse, Every person who commits a sexual crime banned from being able to hold down any career involving the public even if that crime is minor like at age 16 having consential sex with a 15 year old.

I believe every news story the media pumps out

INSERT TUI advert please

Then someone drags up Child Abuse! Well guess what guys most child abuse in New Zealand involves the Maori and Islander population.
Compared to the UK New Zealand is safer than the UK so stop bringing that paranoire and fear over here.

Meantime think about the English Migrant killed today in a Road accident

Dangerous roads we have.
why are you getting infuriated? These things happen here as they do anywhere else in the world.

Fact. NZ has the 2nd highest per capita child abuse figures in the world, behind South Africa. Sorry if that does not fit with your profile of NZ as a safe place to bring up children.

NZ is not a safe place to bring up children according to the figures. Erm, let me rephrase that, unfortunately, for the majority of kids it is safe, but for a very high percentage it's not.

NZ is a brilliant place to bring up kids as long as you are not a child abuser. Those particular stats, although providing some insight into NZ society, probably have no relevance to peoples' decision to migrate.

True, 'cos hopefully you don't do that to your own kids. But it is a reflection of NZ society, and eventually one you will be a part of. Like gangs. They are a problem too. Petty crime. Criminals in jail making cell phone calls to import P. Kids hung on washing lines and then stuffed in a tumble drier. Chinese business men found in suitcase in auckland harbour. Boy racers. P epidemic. Mental health crisis. Highest depression in the world. ALl this stuff is going on, every day in NZ.

The point is in NZ shit happens too. But on the whole this is still one hell of a great country.

I get infuriated that someone brings it up as being a BIG problem.

Now as for Child Abuse well thanks to a bunch of namby pambies its effectively an offence to smack your childs bottom if they misbehave. Same namby pambies who are wondering why we have a youth problem and crime and a generation that does not fear the police or respect authority.

You missed my point focus on these one off event of a hammer attack on a englishman and miss the other Englishman killed in a road accident. Cripes in Hackney a hammer attack would not even get a mention in the newspapapers.

You are not concerned about NZ having the 2nd highest child abuse figures in the world ?

If you don't think it's a big problem now, when would you consider it a problem? When NZ is the number 1 child abuse country in the world?

As for the pom being killed with a hammer. Tragic. Guy on the road. Well, again, another tragedy.

What about Bridget Brauer the german backpacker who was killed last year? Was that a one of as well?

What about the Canadian in wellington who was attacked by skinheads and almost died last year?

How about the chinese guy who was attacked by skinheads in christchurch?
Was that a one of as well?

And yep, totally agree with the goverment that you should NOT be allowed to smack yer kids.

I guess this thread is totally pointless because :

a) It doesn't mention the beach
b) It doesn't mention the views
c) It doesn't mention how great NZ is
d) It doesn't mention the weather
e) It doesn't mention where you can buy a packet of walkers crisps.
f) It doesn't give anybody warm and fuzzies.

Nice to see a constructive argument. Hope nobody ends it before the namby pamby squiffy jiffy turdy wurdy knobby jocky comes in and says 'Ah Jesus,BE is heading into anarchy, they're at eachother's throat' bollocks.

Good on you. It's not personal, and both of you (Ming and Col) are doing well.

Absoultely plenty of threads about where to get a dime bar.

I have been living in NZ for over 6 years now, so I don't really particulary care how it compares to England etc. Better? Sure.

But, if you are telling me not to care because it's better than England, I can't do that either. When somebody stuffs a kid in a tumble drier and beats another with a baseball bat so ferociously that there is blood on the ceiling, then sorry 'bout that. Cos I do care! And it is important.

A lot of this stuff is never talked about. In particular, suicide, child abuse, and kiwi depression.

Suicide rate here is sky high, but the logic seems to be don't talk about it cos it might encourage others to top themselves. Witness the insane attempted banning of the doco depicting people throwing themselves of the golden gate bridge in San Fran. Didn't get a general release.

I know why people don't want to here so called negatives - it goes against why they migrate. But it's not really a negative if you put it in perspective. This is your new home, this stuff needs to be dealt with, and even with all this crap going on, it still beats the UK hands down.

fo shizzle my nizzle!

Its pointless because what exactly are you trying to put accross continually that cannot be read in a newspaper and has been mentioned many times many times.

We all know theres crime here as there is everywhere and i doubt anyone lives their life not knowing there are some bad people out there and if they do they are at best naive at worst stupid.

If you're as worried as you seem then go find somewhere to live else but i assure you there will be murders, child abuse, assaults etc there as well.

What are you planning to do about your worries other than let everyone else know your worried about it? Some people rather than just have concern for their family safety and take normal measures over the kids safety, which is fine, seem to take on an obsession that theres child abuse out there and therefore go over the top on their kids lives and tell everyone else the same.

As for listing non Kiwi's that get attacked in NZ, the majority of which are not attacked because they are foreigners at all but just randomly, well again take a look around the world it happens....its crime.

Its a pointless thread because we all know about it, its not new but you can i suppose keep bringing it up again and again.

As for smacking your kids the 'PC mummy' brigade will back the law preventing it all day long. Smacking a child in our house is a tap on a nappy padded bum for a two year old in the most extreme of her behavior and a last resort. We have a very well behaved 6 year old who was treated the same way. The law is daft..............

I await the 'a tap is an assault' type replies that will undoubtedly follow but we as a couple will continue to do what we feel is right.

Fair enough. What would you consider an appropriate thread then? Give me a suitable topic.

Why is it that if you bring up a problem with NZ society you are invited to "find somewhere else to live?"

Don't be so precious.

Oh, I think I just found what you consider an appropriate thread. Cheap airfares...
