I don't mind living in Auckland. I also reckon one of the key things is to not travel around too much.
No. 1 would be no commute across town or into the city.
No. 2 would be to be able to live in a decent spot (Auckland is a series of interconnected villages).
No. 3 make reasonable use of the city facilities such as festivals, nice restaurants, arts, sports etc - the sort of thing that you want from a 'city' but only as a visitor, then retreat back to your quieter suburb.
TBH you could do this in Wellington as well as Auckland though. Dunno about Christchurch.

You've got it all sussed out bearskin, but Auckland is warmer than Wellie and Ch Ch. and Desmondo84 you've got a good spot there as well, I can remember when beachlands had nothing but baches and was considered not to be part of Auckland, and a section on Waiheke sold for four hundred bucks. Those were the days.
