Does anybody out there know how the schooling system works and if we have to pay before we become perminent residence? , or any connections along these lines?

Re: Schooling Fees?
If you have a work permit or work-to-residency-visa you won't have to pay any special fees for primary or secondary schooling. Tertiary students would have to pay full international fees. Of course with permanent residency it's the same as being a citizen as far as schooling goes all the way from pre-school to university.
Schools here are zoned. If you want to have your child attend a school outside 'the zone' you can depending on the student numbers and if there is space. Schools also are rated according to deciles 1-10. This rating refers to the socio-economic`standing of the zone in which the school draws its students. For example a school in Remuera would be a decile 10 school as Remuera is a wealthy area. A school in Otara in South Auckland may well be the polar opposite. Do be aware that a high decile rating isn't necessarily a guarantee of a higher quality of teaching.
Some primary schools have their students wear uniforms and others do not require it. All intermediate and secondary schools require uniforms.
New Zealand doesn't provide school dinners. Most parents pack their kids lunches or give them a few dollars for pies or other such rubbish at the school's tuck shop.
That's all I can think of for now.
