I laugh at you but actually I like Michael Laws, unlike so many Mayors he has actually used in office to make life better for the people of Wanganui. I like that, I like that a lot.

I don't want to be negative but I'm sure most people tend to underestimate their commute in Auckland. Granted Maraetai to Takanini no doubt is 25 mins as you're unlikely to be hitting much commuter traffic. Heading into Auckland CBD from there would be a different matter entirely.
We live in rural Whitford and i work on Stanley St in the city and have been doing the daily commute for well over a year now. On a normal day it takes me 40 mins, on bad days that can be over an hour. Recently the traffic seems to have improved dramatically and not sure exactly why but there have been plenty of 25-30 trips of late.
Auckland traffic is never predictable and my job luckily means my time at the office is flexible but if you had a time critical start time in the morning a trip in to town via motorways etc would be a pain.
My other option which is a great way to travel is the ferry from Beachlands (pine harbour) which is great and thoroughly recommended if you can walk to your office at the city end.

Talking of Wanganui my Aunt and Cousin live in Castlecliffe which is rough as old boots.
Last time i visited i got pulled over by the police because they didnt recognise me and thought it was a new gang member moving into town! I loved that one - they even checked me out on the radio.

Nowt wrong with Auckland - totally depends where you live. Some areas are outstandingly gorgeous and others not so much! It's where the majority of jobs are though. It wasn't our first choice at all but I got a job and now we live here. Absolutely love it. You can easily live practically in the sticks, have a semi-rural life and still work in or near the city. My advice would be don't dismiss Auckland out of hand.
