'Rough Areas' in NZ

Can anyone tell me where the 'rough areas' in NZ are please I don't want to go from UK to same in NZ :unsure:

mmmmmmmmmmmm nope would like some help with where to avoid. I know everywhere has it's problems and knowhere is paradise I just want to be somewhere I can feel safe to walk down the street without clining onto my bag :(

We are not sure where we are going to end up as it will depend on job offer for Jim but we have never wanted to stay in or around Auckland. We would like a general run down on the country as a whole please

Same as any country, there are good and bad areas everywhere - you need to be more specific really.

On the whole though, I think NZ doesn't have the same anti-social problems that plague much of urban Britain. Much of the violent crime is related to drink, especially inner-city at weekends. Crime is also disproportionate amongst certain ethnic groups and when you look at houses you'll probably be able to see straightaway what the area is like.

Use the street view when you're looking at houses. There's no area that's completely good or completely bad although you probably wouldn't want to start your new life in Otara ;)

Thought they weren't looking at Auckland.

What I would do is look at house prices, that usually tells you a lot about any particular area.

Since most houses in NZ are detached (unlike UK) it can actually be quite hard to spot bad areas sometimes. There can be grotty houses mixed in with nice houses in goodish areas as well and just because it looks grotty on outside doesn't mean it is so on the inside and vice versa...so I would recommend school decile level of the local school...8-10 is what you should be looking for rather than 1-3:).

Can I just make one comment in regards to street view? In some areas the houses can look absolutely appalling. The effort is put into the inside of the house. Half of wellington could look like it is falling apart. No jokes please...I know where that was going to lead to :P

One idea may be to look at the schools in the area. If there are a significant number of schools in a 1A - 5 decile it might be a bit dodgy (ok, low income). That's not scientific but any higher and it starts to indicate more of a variety. The reason I say 5 and not 7 or higher is some areas have a variety. But once you are actually in NZ you would be able to have a better idea. Having a wider range is a good idea. Although you would want it higher around 7,8,9,10.

Oh, and a school's decile is made up of a number of different factors - not parental income but rather average income of a select group in that area, number of bedrooms in the property, ownership status (I think), education level etc. But it's a start.

Streetview only helps if you have context. As an example, if my parents looked at a lot of places on streetview in the UK they would be horrified at terrace housing. "It looks like a council block" "It looks like Coronation Street" etc. Ditto with anyone looking at property here.

It is quite easy to distinguish in many areas.

It's quite easy, in Auckland at least, to see where state housing, or ex-state housing areas are.
