Re: Rotorua
It all depends on what sort of work you are looking for, expectations, where you are coming from etc etc.
Houses are still very affordable, central for travelling, great outdoor activities, some very low socio-ecconomic clusters and the usual social problems you find in NZ.
A little more back ground would help, send us a PM for specific questions.
Cheers

Its also known as "Rotovegas" due to the high numbers of motels and constant stream of tourists.

And by the lake and in a lot of the town centre it smells strongly of sulphur which may not be to everyone's taste? Decent shops though by NZ standards. My comments are based on a 3 day visit.

Yes, there is a smell. The council pump the smell in only for the tourists, there is no smell where Rotorua residents actually live

Re: Rotorua
We've been there a few times and some of the hotels have alarms that get triggered when the levels get dangerously high, guess there may also be a public alarm system too.
Rotorua has a certain charm and some of the buildings and parks are beautiful. I think the geothermal thing is probably a bit over done though but if it brings in tourist revenue then it's understandable.
Last time we went it was surprisingly cold there and foggy, I always think of it as being a hot place. Given the choice I'd prefer Taupo.

It is however a lovely picturesque "city".
