karma coming your way- thanks for all recce info.
I gave up camping 10 yrs ago! Too cold to 'camp' in April in NZ(would have considered a motorhome with a heater though )

Hi Helen,
there are hotels near the airport, we stayed in one. You can phone them when you get there and they will pick you up in a 7 seater and take you back to the hotel for free.
Only thing is, it isn't the nicest of areas, and not a nice intro to Auckland!
So I would also say get a cab to town.

Re: Recce advice please
That's brilliant. thanks Jack-
We might need to find a hotel near airport first night cos flight we are looking at arrives 23.30. then hire car next morning. Did you notice any nice hotel/motels near airport?
How long did you hire car for- for the $830? How much is petrol?
I like the idea of using a motorhome too - but cost wise not convinced its good value? car/motel v motorhome and campsite?
Any thoughts?

we'll look into this.
We finally heard from Singapore airlines that we now have tickets for seats on same flight home -Sing to Lon. leg of journey. All set to plan the route, hire the car, book hotels etc. So excited it's coming together.
How long does it take to drive Welly to Auckland? At the end of the trip just need to get back to airport so -Can we do it in a day or should we plan to take 2 days?

Hiya Helen
Glad to hear that things are starting to come togeher for your trip.
If I were you, I'd save 2 days back to Auckland. It's over 600kms between the two, so if you drive nonstop at the speed limit, you're looking at least 6 hours . Maybe look at Taupo or Rotarua for a stopover

What dates are you going?
We drove all the way from Welly to Auckland in campervan in one mad dash to get campervan back before they closed at 4:30pm! Just made it!! Phew!! Better to do as Sarah said in an ideal world - we'd have liked to spend more time in Taupo, looks really nice. We'd done 3 days in Rotorua before going South - loved there too. Infact, ask me to name where we didn't like would be way quicker!!??

Re: Recce advice please
We leave Lon 8th- Easter day. We arrive in Auck. 9th or 10th April, then go to Tauranga, then down to Welly, and will visit friends in Marten either going or return, then back to Auckland. It's just a case of playing around with how many days in each place , then fly to Sing. 19th, london 21st. It's daughters 18th birthday 24th so need to be home to organise party!
Thanks Sarah and Caroline.

Re: Recce advice please
sorry it took me so long to reply. We were there November/December and were well warm enough! no heat needed. We stayed on sites mainly but a couple of nights we stayed next to rivers etc - easy to park, easy to drive and no probs at all. We loved it and were not restricted to booked hotels, etc. Brill!

We arrive Auckland on the 9th too!!!!!! If you see 2 harrased people pretending to be adults, a 14 year old looking like she's in charge, an 11 year old sulking, an 8 year old hyper active boy/action hero and a very loud cute 4 year old ... suggest you run very fast in the opposite direction!!!!
I've just checked the itinerary and we fly from Lon 8th, from Sing. on 9th and arrive Auck. 10th. so looks like you'll be a day ahead of us
We'll give you a few days to recover from jetlag before we arrive in Tauranga for our recce visit
