Re: Reaons for leaving the UK
I'm surprised that OP feels that there is no job security and poor working conditions in the NHS. Things are not perfect here and I could always do with more money of course but my current job security is exactly what worries me most about emigrating to NZ.
I would have to give up my 32 annual leave days + BH's, excellent sickness entitlement, very flexible working arrangement and lose money on my final salary pension scheme. Admitttedly I have 20+ years service and I have mental health officer status ..... but really the NHS is still a good employer in comparison to lots of other places. What I also like as a nurse is that at last we are managing to lose the "Doctors handmaiden" thing which from what I've heard about NZ may still be an issue over there.
However I still want to go to NZ (as opposed to wanting to leave the UK) because:
I want to have an adventure
I want to wake up and see the ocean every morning
I want to live a more healthy out door lifestyle and .....
.... most importantly I dont want to die with any regrets.
I think these things are more important than money so I hope our recce in Feb confirms my expectations.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained !!

I am from Cardiff and my wife is from Bridgend .... and she is a nurse too!
You sound like you are coming over for all the right reasons. It's taken her 18 months to get her ward running well but she is really enjoying it now. I don't think that she has seen as many problems in the public health service over here as some people have said. It's by no means perfect but it's not that bad either.
When are you planning to make the move?

Hi Paul, we can't move over for a few years yet as we have elderly (but frail!!!!) parents and it would literally be the death of them if we left now
Couldn't do that to them.
We are coming over for a recce in Feb though and if we like it then we will start making definate plans - clearing credit cards, finishing my MSc etc.
Dont want to leave it too long tho so there might be some difficult decisions ahead!
What job did your wife have in the UK, same sort of position as in NZ. Was it just a question of getting things run her way that took 18 mths or was there a lack of consistency/good staff on the ward. Did she train in Bridgend by the way? How have you adjusted to the drop in wages?

Hi Jakie,
We live in Llangeinor, we're also planning to move to NZ next year. I'm in IT and wife is in Mental Health. We've been to NZ to visit Sister and other family. My other sister is also emigrating in November!
Cheers

Great thread gang, for us we hope to go for the lifestyle. We love the UK, but want to take our girls (6 and 2) away from the over-commercialised, throw away culture that is going on. Of course, we know that this is happening all over the world, but the general vibe that we got from our trip to NZ (and from these web sites) is that NZ is more family centred, less materialistic and chilled. I learnt many years back not to let work rule our lives- luckily we have just cleared our morgage off, as will be the case in NZ
I work hard, then leave it there to go home to my family. I guess everyone is the same
I'm a nurse too- will only find out for sure what it's like once I'm out there I'm not the most forceful person in the world, but not sure about being a hand maiden to Drs- will have to start a mutiny

Re: Reaons for leaving the UK
Jeez theres a place from the past i've not been to be for maybe 30 years but used to go to virtually every week.
Still got the swimming pool i take it?
We used to have the pool to ourselves most weeks when we used to go there with my parents in the evenings.
Sounds like the Welsh are well and truely coming to NZ especially the Mid Glam crowd......
