Re: RACISM -OR NOT RACISM .?
The largest ethnic group at my daughter's school here in Auckland is Indian...but as for whether there is racism...there are certainly stereotypes that people get into with Indian peope but not the same degree of ickiness as is waged at south east asian people. My experience in NZ, as a brit of afrocaribbean heritage has been positive. Apart from people thinking I'm tongan.

Re: RACISM -OR NOT RACISM .?
Thank You all for your messages. Crap Coffee I am suprised such racism or harrassment against British Asian or Indians would exist in a place like Wellington. I would have assummed such a place would be liberal and even welcome British Born Indians to there country because we can speak fluent English hence no language barrier.
Perhaps you don't have to take it so seriously...
No, that's not completely true. I didn't say it's British-Asian, or Indian. however, I heard that horrid story (NOT my work place) from my Irish male friend who works for other govt department when we had lunch together last week. Basically... he said to me like this... they have got a Chinese woman (in her 40's), and she is a sort of secretary who books air tickets, organises toiletry supplies... but the lady is bullied most of the time by her Kiwi female boss and other colleagues (BECAUSE SHE IS JUST CHINESE). and thus she is so sad being in NZ and being treated like a dog etc + doing a crap job (my friend said she was an ex magazine editor in China). like Sr 71 said, it can be incredibly hard to tell what the real motive behind this is. He (my friend) assumes that ..(perhaps..?)... because she does not speak fluent English (Obviously not) & her boss is not liberal enough or Anti - Asians or something - hard to know. Who knows what the real story behind it is, eh? She is certainly not a British-Asian, so you shouldn't worry too much though. If you are lucky then you will meet nice colleagues, but I guess she has very bad luck (IMHO). This sort of thing (racisim) can happen anywhere (when it wants to ).
