This is my wee little corner of NZ. Population 450. Safe as houses for kids. Excellent school, great community. Main industries are farming/agriculture, transport/ logging

Absolutely gorgeous spot Justcol. Wish I knew how to post pics would've have done that for Methven and Mt. Somers. There's tons of these small communities dotted around the South Island and most of them are within easy commute to bigger towns.

Yes. There are still many small village/township communities around the south island. Not so much so up where we are. We have become the victim of hidden gem syndrome and we are now incredibly overwhelmed with new build estates sadly , half of which are simply second properties. Think coromandel invasion
Xch and further down would be a good move imvho. We have considered this for us.

The Canterbury region all day long. I have lived in the North Island in Hawkes Bay and for many years in Dunedin but in my opinion neither come even close to Canterbury.
Rural Canterbury is stunning and has many small rural towns. Selwyn for example has the lowest crime rate of any other district in NZ but is still close enough to a major city (and airport).
Good luck in what you decide to do.

I would love to go to the North island though, I had planned a little trip for myself to Wellington then covid hit and at the time I got stuck in Oz (where I'm originally from).
Planning a NI trip down the track.
