Default one week and a few days

Well we've been here just over a week or so and all's well so far.

In our first week we've successfully set up a savings and current account with ASB including a Visa card with the savings account being at near 8% interest

To the person who a while back stated they needed a UK credit history etc to obtain things in NZ all i can say is rubbish.

Today we walked into a local car dealership and within a few hours got approved for finance on a 50K vehicle with absolutely no reference to the Uk whatsoever it was just based on our NZ circumstances. The same applied to getting an NZ mobile contract.

Best laugh so far this week was the buying of our NZ car..........

We walked into the dealer in Auckland and asked about the car and within 5 minutes the salesman offered us their demo for a 24 hr test drive. Try doing this in the Uk without having a history with dealer........

This week we have managed to fit in three days in wellington and i have to say despite the comments here Wellington is not for us.
I think the telling thing is the weather......

In Auckland houses often come with pools but in Welly they rarely seem to as they are either not useable due to the weather or the fact your house tends to be superglued to a cliff....

Wellington as a city was nice but why on earth so many here raved about 'THE HUTT' is beyond me as it seemed like SHED CITY to me and the last place i'd choose to live if it had to be Wellington for us.

I must say if Wellington was the city for us we would choose the Kapiti coast and the countryside between there and the HUTT as the place to be.

So despite the congestion and the higher house prices etc we are set on the Auckland area as where we would like to stay.

Roll on the next few weeks.................

Glad to hear things are going good for you all.

We will be winging our way over in Jan08 and just hope that the BoP is as everyone tells us. I think you need to visit other places to get a feel for it. Hope you find Auckland is your little piece of heaven to settle in.

Congrats

Fun isn't it discovering all the new ways of doing things and places to see. We love the car dealers. We spent 3 or 4 weekends in a row just going to 'borrow' different 4x4 cos, yep they don't mind you taking them out, keeping them overnight etc. We didn't actually keep any of them overnight or take them out along the beach or anything else reckless. But we certainly shopped around and had some fun before we decided which one to buy!

Sounds like you are getting nicely settled in and liking Auckland.

Glad to hear that you've settled well. As for location, I think it's down to personal preference.

Good luck in settling in and I fully agree with you on Wellington weather but have a look on sth island before you decide on Auckland. I know everyone has different opinions, but to travel all this way and then settle in another big city .......

I'd consider the south island but my wifes employment is either in Penrose, Auckland or Wellington CBD so those are our only choices.

Our south island time will be for sightseeing and skiing only....

Nobody moves to Welly for the weather that's for sure. We're having a shocker lately.

Hi NiseysOH
We arrive in Auckland on Friday would you recommend the garage you purchased your car from? As I would prefer to purchase from a place that someone recommends rather than going in blind.
Great to hear you are settling in so fast

We bought our car from Andrew Simms Mitsubishi a main dealer and the guys there were very good. The dealer principle is an ex-pat himself from the London area.

The salesman we used was Paul Scotting and the business manager who sorted all the finance out for us was Andrew Fleming who also gave us masses of contacts for my bike racing and general NZ things.

As i've allready told them i want another car within 12 months (evo X) they know their on to a good thing i guess but they were all great with the family and even had a salesman looking after the kids while we talked

Lending us their demo was a good move for Paul as i walked back in the following day and bought it saving a fair bit over buying new which was what we initially planned to do.

Pick up the car either tomorrow or friday and can't wait....
