Can one of the moderators change the title to “New Zealands economy will never grow”. We live over a subduction zone so actually the land area is likely to increase. Also “will never” are strong words, can we have “New Zealands economy is unlikely to grow at a high rate”?

Good point . It does conjure up images of New Zealand in a baby grow.

I kinda feel that the title reflects the OP though.

Which is exactly why I advocate it needs changing in light of new information (like the OPs opinion).

Wow some serious stereotyping going on there Josephine, you're one of the few women who could sit down and have a meaningful exchange of views with Alasdair Thompson.

There's no shame in being a labourer, after 20 years nzxpert must be an expert in building too and has probably done well out of it, he obviously doesn't need a degree to get on in the world.

If he feels he can do better in Australia then good luck to him I say, it frees up another job for a New Zealander and everyone wins.

I don't watch TV much (so didn't see the sexist pig squealing) but there was a good (read: informative) bit in the Herald about that the other day:
Two leading labour economists from Cornell University, Francine Blau and Lawrence Kahn, carried out a comprehensive study that takes into account variables such as education, labour market experience, race and choice of occupation, and report that while the gender wage gap does diminish when all those factors are taken into account, about 12 per cent remains unexplained.

Robert Wood, Mary Corcoran and Paul Courant look at graduates of the University of Michigan Law School. They match the men and women in their sample for many of the possible explanatory factors, such as occupation, age, experience, education, time in the workforce, time spent in childcare, average hours worked, grades while in college, and so on. Even after accounting for all of that, the authors find women lawyers make about a quarter to a third less than the men.

Recent research throws up another suggestion: women simply do not ask for more. In the 2003 book Women Don't Ask, Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever point out that among MBAs from Carnegie Mellon University, starting salaries for men were almost US$4000 higher than for women, to a large extent because while only 7 per cent of women negotiated their starting salary, 57 per cent of the men did so. While this may not be a large difference to start with, given that future increments are based on current salary, a small difference early on translates into large differences later in life.

Many researchers, including myself, document a tendency among women to shy away from competitive environments. They often prefer to wait to be offered a raise rather than negotiate one because they find the process fraught with confrontation.

That first study they mention is a very good one because it really gets to the root of the reason women can be paid while being in the same profession. It suggests amongst MBAs quite a proportion of the pay difference between men and women is owed to their training. Companies valued analytical skills amongst the profession highly and men tended to take more analytical courses at college which accounted for the largest part of the disparity in incomes (i.e. women who took the same courses had a much smaller pay gap).

Also just while we are on New Zealand’s economy while we are lagging behind Australia in both average wage and equality in wage we are actually making good ground on the UK.
...real term wage cuts of 3pc in the second half of the year and further sub-inflation pay rises for the following nine months, the latest official forecasts show.
Linky: http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/Rea....html?x=0&.v=1

For those of us who moved here a few years ago the country we remember as offering a higher disposable income and opportunity may no longer exist, it’s kind of a trick of history that we just happened to leave in the middle of an economic boom.

Couple that with the race to the bottom in currency value between the US, UK and other struggling economies. You realise that actually New Zealand is really starting to become more competitive on wages just through the nature of exchange rate at the moment:

Average income in the UK was £499/week (of which £71.05 goes to PAYE), which is NZ$855.90/week at current exchange rates.
Average income in New Zealand was N.Z.$538/week which is $451.73/week after PAYE.

Also remember the UK runs a 20% VAT rate now while we are at 15% GST.

food for thought Charis.

I agree about the pay disparity thing. Ever since I heard about that research I've made a point of negotiating salary, vacation etc and it's been an eye-opener as to how much more you can get when you try. My last 2 contract renewals I've gone up in pay & vacay time. I was talking to a fellow temp the other day, 26, been in the workforce about 5 years...had absolutely no idea she could do that or that she didn't HAVE to take the first offer. I'd say that's pretty common, certainly it never occurred to me either. I actually quite enjoy negotiating, as it turns out.
