Re: Miserable /Unhappy in NZ - for those unhappy in/with NZ
Oh and again, I'm not unhappy IN New Zealand as that would suggest I'm not happy in myself. I'm unhappy WITH New Zealand. It takes a confident person to own up and say that. Most people would take it lying down and just 'get on with it' or utter "she'll be right, mate", not me! I don't have to live like that and choose not to.
I hope I haven't scared anyone into making the decision not to come here. Like I have said, this is my opinion and I only want to prepare people for the reality. How you choose to use the info is your choice. Good Luck to those who are coming over, I hope it all works out just as you see it but please don't become personal to those who it hasn't worked out for.

On the subject of kids and sports etc.... I have a nephew who was very good at running and if he didn't win my sister and BIL would be very indignant - it was never that fact that he wasn't good enough - it was something that someone else had done! Anyway, his little brother was 'put out to pasture' too and he would run along at the back of the field grinning and waving at everyone he knew - he never won but he had a much better time! :-)

Oh, god!! I love this forum!! I though I was the only miserable person in NZ Just want to make a few comment ...
"...people might be shocked to know just how much - and I felt that that was it, I could never leave now...."
Really?? Because I feel leaving every single day
"...But optimist that I am, I've turned my thinking around completely..."
Share your hinst with me, please!!
"...what do you ...most look forward to when you leave here...Me, first on the list is having a REAL or INTELLIGENT conversation with someone..."
Totally agree...Can people in NZ use other words rather than Fantastic?
People mention the "laid-back" attitude of the kiwis as a plus...and I can't stand it!
Laid-back Lazy
The countryside is amazing...but I rather to look at photos while I live in the real world!

Re: Miserable /Unhappy in NZ - for those unhappy in/with NZ
1) Thanks Lardyl for jumping to my defence whilst in my slumber
2) I do not hate NZ, and I do not try to put those off who choose to come!
I advise people as I see it, it is up to those who are reading to decide how they take my advice - please do feel free to search back on my posts. I try to be constructive and honest. I see no point in lying, liars always get found out in one way or another.
After all the work we put in trying to get here, I really do wish I could settle but I can't so my solution is to go. I only wish these negative threads were around when we were researching - the ones that tell you the 'real' problems and not just damp/cold houses and bad driving.
People do recce's here all the time, trying to work out of they want to move or not and decide after 2-4 weeks (or however long) that they do or don't. I see myself as having a 17 month long recce and have decided I do not want to stay. Why is that such a problem? I'm not hiding from the fact that stuff happens here because it doesn't affect me on a daily basis - it might affect my kids and if I've moved them to the other side of the world for a better life, I am failing them!
We have worked hard for a lot of years to earn what we have (in a financial and emotional sense) and we've never had to 'mend and make-do' and I don't think we deserve to have to live that life so we choose not to. On the flip side, if people want to live that life then so be it. Who am I to diss them for making a go of it and succeeding?! I have never wished anyone ill, whether I have had a problem with them for whatever reasons, I can discuss a topic without having to throw the toys out and start ranting/swearing at others for not sharing my viewpoint. Like I said earlier, I will advise people the best I can in as much a positive way as I can but only those reading decide how to take it or what to do with it. Who's problem is that then? Not mine.
If people don't want to read the negatives about NZ, then please god don't read a negative thread, or at least refrain from posting nastiness on it for those who don't share your views.
Armistice Day a couple of days ago... people fought and died so that people like us could have freedom of speech. How many of you remembered them? Yet as soon as the minutes silence is over, you're back to bashing down those who don't agree with you or tell you what you want to hear. A lot of double standards going on... yes, me included sometimes! I don't pretend to be an angel and can give as good as I get but I don't get all worked up to the point where I'm attacking other people.

Exactly you have the right to comment on how ever you see fit from your perspective with regards to life in New Zealand and without the need that you must justify these comments.
If you hang in there and get NZ citizen ship you could always move across the Tasman to Australia...now would'nt that be a thrill?
But seriously could be preferable to where you are...or is that not the case?

Re: Miserable /Unhappy in NZ - for those unhappy in/with NZ
TeamEmbo, in reply to your question about whether folks might prefer the SI, we lived in several places in the SI and also in the NI before we settled in Auckland, and if we hadn't settled in Auckland I doubt we'd still be in NZ.
We simply didn't like the SI and found the towns dull and lacking something. We also didn't take to the NI much either. For us, Auckland has the buzz that was missing elsewhere. Also, the facilities are better here and the scenery just as good as anywhere else.
Personally, the scenery thing seems somewhat over-hyped as there are many just as beautiful places in Europe and in the UK.

As we hope to be out there on a permanent basis sometime end of 09, I find myself being more and more drawn to the posts about thee 'negative' things in NZ.
I hope I don't view NZ through rose tinted specks. I know there are certain things that will 'irritate' me, but hey -those same things irritate the hell out of me in certain areas of the UK.
What I think might be really helpful to people trying to get a handle on 'life in NZ' would be for those who dislike NZ life/communities/lifestyle to state what in their opinion would be Utopia.
What area of the world and what lifestyle they would really feel at home/content with.
That way people like myself can see where they're coming from and whether their values are the same.
Does that make sense?
Great, fantastic, awesome!

Bizarrely, the most spam per capita comes from the Pitcairn Islands - didn't the UK just agree to fund better internet connectivity for them? Let's hope they put some spam filtering on the satellite link!

Re: Miserable /Unhappy in NZ - for those unhappy in/with NZ
I am sometimes unhappy with NZ and sometimes unhappy in NZ so thought I'd share my gripes:
1) Pak n' Save. I'm not a shopper- never shopped for leisure in the UK and consider shopping in any form completely boring. But Pak n' Save is an awful awful shopping experience but it's where I have to shop, such is our budget
2) The hole in the ozone layer; sun feels so strong here at certain times of the year- stronger than in Oz
3) The 'Clean Green NZ' thing is shite. the longer I live here the more I see that NZ really doesn't deserve its (self born) reputation for environmental consciousness
4) Professionalism. I can't say much here to back up my gripe but any self-respecting nurse is likely to struggle big time, at least in Hawkes Bay. You can teach on post-graduate nursing courses here without even having a higher degree or a cert ed (or equivalent)
5) Wages
Those are my gripes.

6) (can't believe I forgot this one- it's a biggie) BREAD. FFS, what is with the bread here?? Even the $5 a loaf stuff has no crust and resembles dough more than bread. I have teeth people, teeth ...
