Default Masport Fatso

Hi - I have a Masport Fatso. Quite old. Wood burner.
We had it on last night and my wife commented that it is not emitting much heat. It was sealed to the room - are we supposed to keep the front bit open to let out some heat, or open one of the stove holes on the top? We haven't had it going with anything open because we didn't want something to spit out of the fire, but I'm guessing once the fire has died down a little it's ok to open one of the hatches. Otherwise the heat does not really get out of it...

Thanks
