I do cycle in ChCh - and i do regular bunch rides on tuesdays and sundays + the occasional race but it is - and this was my point - *harder* and also less fun to cycle in chch than where i lived in the UK.
I see what you mean. I am sure that in England these cycling clubs and tracks around the countryside or areas on the outskirts of villages would be another world altogether! I have to admit that from my understanding there are aspects of living in the UK that to me seem very desirable. I used to cycle to work and back and recreationally but not actually as a member of a club. Are there no cycling clubs there at all? Maybe you could see if you could start one? Sounds a great way of socialising, maybe stop off for a counter lunch and a beer on the way back!

My brotherinlaw's brother works as a partner in a solicitors firm in Auckland - his bonus last year paid for a 4 million dollar beach house. Somehow I dont think you will be slumming it.

Having lived in NZ for 25 years before coming back to UK you will develop a love of the outdoors and my advice is to seek a suburb away from Glendowie. This way you will meet other people and not out all your eggs into your relationship with your kiwi friends. You will also see a big difference suburb to suburb and this could affect the way you view your first 6 months or so.

Perhaps on your next holiday check out Devonport or Howick? both old haunts of mine.

While living in NZ I still managed an annual trip to Europe to ski and visit family over christmas. Alternatively it provided them a great destination for a holiday.

If the decision is for the kids like us you do have to make a few sacrifices but I look at it as more making alterative decisions ie holidays instead of Tuscanny we are doing Tailand - although we still intend to make trips back to Europe in alternate years.

Good luck.
