Default Holiday in OZ - Gold Coast

We're toying with ideas for a holiday next year, maybe March. We are a couple and taking no kids. Has anyone been to the Gold Coast Oz. Is it too touristy and busy. Any info please, where to stay, eat, etc. Do you need to hire a car or is everything closeby. What's the temperatures like, do you see many spiders, creepies or any insects when staying close to the beach.

Never been to Gold Coast but travelled to Oz from NZ and used this company for accomodation etc. They have deals for Gold Coast/Sunshine with trips etc. Just book lights from NZ seperately.

Why dont you ask in the Barbie forum. Perhaps you might get some ideas from the local BE members?

Might even be a meet for you to met some new friends

Wife and I did a week on the Gold Coast this January - couldn't wait to get out and ended up spending extra on the last 2 nights staying back in Brisbane! Would NOT spend money going back there again. Brisbane would be on the cards for a short trip again - really liked the feel of the city.

We have also since been told the Sunshine Coast is where we should have gone!

Saving up now to do Shanghai in a few years time

Have you been to the Islands - we've had some great holidays in Fiji - real, get away from it all, relaxing time.

The Gold Coast was ok i liked it, it is indeed very busy but on the beach all you see is miles of sand and not too many people depending where you end up.

If you want a quieter place then sunshine coast is your best option.

I have a few pics i took over there, if you want to see them just drop me a PM.

Hi Boopy!

I'd recommend Port Douglas("Port") which is about an hour drive north of Cairns along the very scenic coastal highway. There's great diving on the GBR and the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation are very close. Also Mossman Gorge is just up the road. Also close is the Atherton Tablelands and the picturesque Kuranda town with its crafts & alternative feel. Port Douglas is thought of as being a bit up market but I've been on two separate trips there and stayed in both ends of the accomodation costs and had a great time. Port has great restaurants, cafes and bars too and Four Mile Beach is lovely. Also just south of Port there's several idyllic quiet beaches.

Hope that helps a bit!
Dave

Waht sort of holiday are you afet, a "get away from it all" or a "do lots of stuff" type holiday.
I found the gold coast very touristy, like people have said the sunshine coast is quieter. brisbane itself is also nice for a couple of days if you want to take in another city.
the gold coast does offer stuff to do like the theme parks but these are probably aimed more at the kids.
alternatively, if you are after a get away from it all lying on the beach holiday then fiji is a nice option. we went to mana island, and literally did nothing except snorkelling, reading, eating, swimming, diving, lying on the beach for a week. (well....... maybe we did do some other things....but im not one to "kiss and tell" )

so it depends what you want really... happy holidaying...
