Hi,

I will be leaving Christchurch next week. I have my car listed on Trademe and other online advertisings, but no luck so far. I even went to a few dealers who advertise buy cars for cash. Their offers are 50% less compared to market values. Some offers to sell my car under consignment agreement. Has anyone had this experience before? I couldn't get any answers as how long it might take and how soon will I get my money once the car is sold. What about my car title? Who keeps it? They don't seem to give me a clear answer.

What kind of car are you selling? make model as much detail as poss..

As for market value.....you must be going to the wrong market, as value is merely what someone will pay you for it. It caught plenty out with houses over the years, and I'm assuming it's not a classic that might appreciate with age.

I had the same problem, we left NZ last Saturday (now in Arizona for a week before going back to UK). I rang Turners Auctions to see how much they would buy my car for and they only wanted to give me $5000. I sold it to a dealer in the end in Rangiora for $6,500 but I bet he has it for sale for nearly $10,000! Sometimes you have to take what you can to get rid. I tried advertising on Trademe and Sella and had no luck. I even put make me a sensible offer but the cheeky buggers were wanting to offer me half the price it was on for! In the end for me it was worth getting rid for $6500. Good luck.

The best offers from these used car dealers were $5,500. One of the guy mentioned if I were willing to do consignment, its market value will be at least $10K.

Anyway, has anyone done car fair located in Christchurch?

Matt Blair Motors opposite Caltex and next to Police Station, google him and ask him the question. Good luck! I feel I have still been ripped off though and probably would have got more had I had the time to sell and leave it on for weeks.

Thanks Shirl, I'm so happy just sold the car through the private ad. I finally got many calls after reducing my price, but it is still a thousand more than what these used car dealers offered. In case someone needs more information, I found the Turner Car Auction and Canterbury Car Fair are good sources for last minute sell.
