Default HAM!!! Unsmoked available anywhere?

I've happily just arrived in Rotorua after spending some inagural time in Auckland.

I love standard UK breaded ham but i cannot find anywhere that sells ham that isn't smoked! Anyone know where i can buy unsmoked ham?

Most ham at the supermarket deli 'Champagne Ham' (as they call it) is not smoked.

Pak N Save, New World and both Countdowns sell "Champagne ham" here in Rotorua!
Closest to "proper ham" we've found!

Also, if you are after a piece of ham to cook for Christmas, it is not easy to find a ham that is uncooked. Most of what you'll find in the usual shops will be pre-cooked and you just finish it off and glaze it yourself.

The best uncooked one we found was from Holly Bacon in Hastings. An all-round awesome shop - their bacon isn't too shabby.

I buy middle eye bacon from the deli etc counter in Pak N Save. It's not advertised as Hellers brand but that's what is on the label when the person serving hands the bag of it to me. I don't think it's smoked. I can't remember how much it is per kilo but I get 8 rashers for just under five dollars.

Agree on Champagne ham too. I get it from Countdown. It's delicious.

I don't buy ham from Pak N Save as to me, it tastes like thinly sliced car tyre.

I just about cried when I realised you cannot buy raw ham at Christmas time to cook yourself here in NZ. I hunted around so many shops looking for one THAT I COULD COOK. COME ON NEW ZEALAND. I realise now you can only get that in specialist shops

However, I did glaze and roast a pre-cooked ham I got from either a butchers or Countdown and it was delicious both hot and cold. Just another, 'oh it's not that bad really' moment for me in New Zealand.

I don't understand why it's done this way in NZ. New Zealanders who can cook can really cook. Other meats are sold raw, why not Christmas hams ? That and other imponderables (for me at least) in New Zealand.

Yes same for me Snap Shot, I couldn't get my head around the idea of cooking a hulking great lump of ham for only one hour. We got a half leg provided for free one year and I too found it to be 'not that bad really' but still not enough to be forking out $75 for one at anytime soon.
