Gambling is it legal in NZ?
If so is it common place i.e. bookies in every town or is it pretty low key?

I get the impression it is common in the larger towns. I don't know about low-key though. That's hard to say. In the suburbs south of Auckland it is very common, and quite obvious. Not low-key at all. There are poker parlors and TAB betting places in every town in the southern suburbs. There is one TV channel in Auckland that broadcasts dog races all day and night, so if you don't pay for Sky TV, one of the 8-9 channels you get is dedicated to
gamgling of a sort.
