Does anyone know if a uk freeview box works over in nz. I am guessing not but am not sure.

No - NZ Freeview uses different technology...only the name remains the same
Techie moment: In order to provide High Def capability NZ have gone for the newer MPEG4 format, while UK uses MPEG3. They did some trials recently with MPEG4 but the boxes were never on general sale.

We had it in the Uk and it kept freezing and going black when it had trouble getting the signal! So frustrating!

I think "maybe" is the best answer. Freeview via a satellite dish has been available for about 6 months (I think) - the version which will support HD is via a normal aerial and is only just being launched properly.
How good the reception is will sort of depend where you are - if conventional reception of UHF is OK then (they say) it'll be good, otherwise it's a satellite dish and no HD I'm afraid
