You're almost right, Avid. Women's suffrage movements began in the UK around the mid 19th century, well before NZ granted the vote in 1893.

The word suffragette was probably not used until the beginning of the 20th century.
Here is the Oxford English Dictionary entry:
Suffragette
A female supporter of the cause of women's political enfranchisement, esp. one of a violent or ‘militant’ type. Also as v. intr. (in quot. fig.); suffragetism; suffragettish, suffragetty adjs.
1906 Daily Mail 10 Jan., Mr. Balfour and the ‘Suffragettes’... It was not surprising that Mr. Balfour should receive a deputation of the Suffragettes. 1907 Athenæum 28 Sept. 358/2 [Aristophanes] who represented Cleon as noisy, Euripides as sentimental, Socrates as pedantic, and women as ‘suffragettes’. [there's more but you get the point]
Anyway, one of the real Renaissance men of New Zealand, Bruno Lawrence, was born in Brighton. He's currently not living anywhere anymore, I'm afraid.

To be precise, he was from the village of Eccleston in St.Helens (just like me, hey, perhaps I'm going to do great things here). There is a plaque dedicated to him in Christ Church, Eccleston.

Does this one count?
Ernest Lord Rutherford.
Father of the Atom
Ernest Rutherford became one of the most famous scientists in history and he started life here in the Tasman District. Ernest Lord Rutherford, the man who became known as the 'Father of the atom' was born in Brightwater in 1871 and was one of twelve children born to James and Martha Rutherford.
There is a bit of a monument to him at Brightwater. Brightwater is a small community outside of Nelson, South Island.

He is in Shortland Street, as much of a woodentop in SS as he was in CS. Wants to live here forever, must be wanting to reinvent himself as his acting and pop career took a nosedive in the UK. Also went into politics, think he fell flat on his face with that as well.
I am sad.....I watch both....

OK... this is a bit wide of the mark but interesting nonetheless. My OH, Lynda has a famous English cousin... he's not bad at football. Lynda's family name is Beckham. Need I say more! We live at Riverstone, Upper Hutt.

He doesn't seem to take very many holidays here.
Close Up: Michael Crawford Feb 13, 2006
It has been six years since Michael Crawford was last in New Zealand, but in March he returns here once more.
