famous british residents living in new zealand?
 
hi i'm from newcastle, england and doing some research about new zealand. i'm interested in british people that have moved to new zealand and done/achieved something significant. or perhaps people with dual citizenship that have achieved something significant? people that are well known in new zealand/in a position of authority that are british born. can anybody help? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

Both of Peter Jackson's parents are/were English...

hmmm....that bloke from Frankie Goes to Hollywood (The one with the moustache) lives in New Zealand.

Gareth Hunt (of the New Avengers) was an illegal immigrant in NZ when he was young.

Michael Barrymore lived here for a year after he ****** that bloke in the ******** pool.

Not much help, is it?

The actor Sam Neill is British but moved to NZ as a child.


And didn't NZ get the vote for women because some suffragettes moved here? That might count.

Looks like we are both wrong. Suffragettes started in the UK in the 1870's, before NZ gave women the vote...

(wonder when the men are going to get it)

....but the woman who started the suffragette movement in NZ, although being British born, isn't really connected to the British suffragettes.

Pop culture probably, but Richard O'Brien from Rocky Horror and Erm .. Crystal Maze fame moved to Hamilton NZ from Cheltenham UK and grew up in Hamilton. Where they have a statue noting the fact :rofl:

Now back in the UK though so maybe not what you are looking for ..

suffragists started in the 1870s, suffragettes started in 1903

On the sporting front:

there was a time when just about the whole NZ football team was English born, including the head and assistant coaches when we NZ got to the 82 WC.

a few Enlish born rugby players have learnt their trades here:
Martin Johnson and Jamie Salmon played junior rugby here before moving back to UK
whereas John Gallagher had a long All Black career
