Engineering Industry.....how big is it in NZ?
Hi All,
Currently studying a Engineering degree that covers Mechatronics, Control Systems, Robotics, etc. Was initially thinking of emigrating to Australia, but have recently opened my options to include New Zealand.
Obviously any industry varies, from region to region, so what Im looking for is answer/input from people in different regions around NZ. I have tried googling engineering in various areas, but unless a business has the word "Engineering" in its title, Im not get much useful info.
In particular, I would love to hear from anyone in the Queenstown area.....
Thanks

You won't find much down there methinks. Hardly renowned for cutting edge technology.....except on skis.

The problem I have is that when I google Engineering, I just get the usual stuff. Mechanics, Structural, etc, but the truth is anywhere there is technology, has engineering applications. Airports, Ski lifts, wind turbines, modern transport. They are all applications of engineering. What I need is a point of contact on the ground so to speak, that can tell me who's what and such, but thanks for the reply.

Our own Mechatronics graduates (Canterbury Uni) have some trouble getting jobs in NZ. However if you have done a large element of control in your degree you should be flexible. Try the IPENZ job search facility - I am not sure how widely used it is but it is very specifically what you need.

My husband was sponsored by Beca, a very large engineering firm. They have branches in several areas of N Z and in OZ. May be worth approaching them direct with your cv

you won't get the big "sexy" project such as the channel tunnel.... but you may get a look in on sewerage pipes or a short tunnel here and there in and around auckland.....

There you may be surprised. Beca are involved in sky scrapers in Indonesia and Asia, it's no different really to what my husband did in UK project wise

The husband responds:-
Currently working for Beca buildings in Auckland on multi million dollar construction projects in Auckland area. In addition the Auckland dept. are also currently involved in overseas projects throughout Australasia, which are all designed from Auckland based office. Many opportunities throughout Oceania and Asia in mechanical, electrical, structural, fire, engineering and mining. Anyone thinking that engineering within NZ is a small industry are mistaken, and should look on the Beca site to acertain the full extent of projects delivered from a NZ based company.
