Day trips from Welly to SI
Possible? I'm thinking yes, as they're pretty damned close... but what would one actually do when on the South Island?...
Is there anything, or would it be best to rent a car and go exploring for one night, then come back the next day? I get the impression that where one disembarks from the ferry is pretty much the middle of bloody nowhere.
Any thoughts?
Thanks all!

Picton's quite a nice little town for a ferry port. The wineries are within 30min drive. You could get a water-taxi to one of the many bays in the sounds and walk some of the Queen Charlotte Track, which is beautiful. You'd be better to give it a few days or a week and explore the area properly though, there are some beautiful places to stay in the Marlborough Sounds. You can also charter all sorts of boats if you want to explore by water.

Picton is really just a ferry terminal, although in a very pretty spot. There is heaps to do in that region of the SI though, Abel Tasman National Park, Queen Charlotte walkaway, fishing, wineries, wineries, wineries, boat trips, sea kayaking, sailing, tramping, camping, Nelson and Takaka, Nelson Lakes National Park, caving - way to much to do to just arrive and then catch the next ferry back. Although that said, the ferry trip is just lovely on a good day.
