Commuting to Auckland or Wellington

Commuting to Auckland or Wellington
Can anyone advise on the levels of traffic into Auckland or Wellington, as I believe it is best to live outwith the city?
We live on an island so we're not used to lots of traffic and wonder if it will be too much of a shock to our system moving to a city :-)

from my own personal experience on visits getting into Auckland CBD is horrendous Wellington not as bad. but it does depend on so many factors, weather, time of day, accidents etc

in Auckland it all depends on where your commuting from and what time your commuting at.
I live on the North Shore, I used to commute into the CBD and now I commute to South Auckland. In the UK I used to commute into Glasgow from Kilmarnock (I'm guessing from your name you might know where those places are!)
My commute into Auckland is way easier than my UK commute was. I used to spend at least 50% of my UK journey at a standstill in motorway traffic and that only happens on my commute here if I'm stuck behind an accident. In the CBD itself I don't find the traffic anything like as busy as it was in the centre of Glasgow.
Yes its busy, and it'll be a lot busier than your used to, but at least that might give you something to compare it to.
The one thing that does make a huge difference to Auckland traffic is the weather. Despite the fact that it rains here, a lot, Auckland drivers just cant drive in the rain which makes traffic a lot heavier with a lot more accidents than usual.

I travel into Wellington daily by train, they are by the most reliable and hastle free, but sometimes you do have delays etc.
We came from a small village in Devon but now live in Mangaroa a rural part of Upper Hutt, I personally wouldn't drive into Wellington on a regular basis, traffic jams and parking fees are just too much. If you live somewhere accessible take the train I find its much easier.

Thanks for all the answers!
Yes, lisamct, you've got the right "Bute"
RedDragon2008 - Waiheke Island sounds like a beautiful place to live - I'd feel right at home on an island again. It's almost the same size / population as here and even the ferry trip is the same length.....spooky. It's pre-ordained
