Question Christmas Cake

Nope. I haven't made one. I wouldn't want to make one. I do enough domestic toil as it is.

Where can I buy a decent Christmas cake . One with marzipan and the proper icing.

Not one with squidgy icing and not one of those that looks like a dundee cake really.

The scary cake lady at the Farmers Market in Blenheim does them, in various sizes. $20-$60. If I remember I will take a photo for you this weekend.

They don't have real marzipan here (cakes you buy will almost certainly be covered in a layer of artifically flavoured almond icing as well as white icing - mentally sweet and not right at all) but luckily it is very easy to make and you can buy a fruit cake now, feed it a bit of booze over next couple of weeks and then cover with marzipan and icing. Bit more hassle than buying but lot less than making from scratch.

I would probably make my own marzipan and icing, but a friend of mine bought some marzipan from New World last year and said it was nice.

Countdown were doing 2 recently, not their own brand, and they were delicious. Yes we've already eaten it. They were on offer for just over $10.00 I think, each weighing 1kg. Really, really nice.

Try making Nigella's chocolate Christmas cake. Made it last year a week before christmas, heavy, rich, sticky and very decadent. Will have a go at making one next weekend, although the recipe seems a bit heavy on coke.

and yis please

I've never , ever made a Christmas cake but love the things.

One of my annual presents , from a friend of my old Dad, was a Christmas cake so I never had to even think about such things.

I will cherish them both. Keep one and eat the other straight off

Until next year then ladies.

I shall start it next August so I've plenty of time to give it a good feed.

Almond-pasted mine last Wednesday, so time to start royal icing it tomorrow.
