I am in the early stages of planning a trip to NZ late next year when I will be 78
Therefore would it be possible to hire a car for about a month. If not then the trip is a non-starter. Last time I was there was for the millenium.

Have you looked at the car rental websites to see what's available for your preferred dates? I'm not sure what your age would have to do with renting a vehicle, though unless you're under 21.

Before I posted I had a look at a few hirers and all seemed to mention 25-65.
But taking your advice I dug deeper into Economy Hire and found reference to maximum age of 85.
Not sure who I will hire from but things are looking good.

Just an aside: Hubby and I have just booked Avis rental cars for the UK and France. The website says rentals between 25 and 70 years of age. Hubby is 76 and main driver..... but we have booked the car rentals with no issues.

RaD car hire (used to be Rent a Dent) have done us well in the past.
Going to book with them again this coming February and March 2024.
Pro -tip - take out a car hire excess policy for around £55 UKP and this avoids any worries about either paying a big wodge of cash for excess cover or risking a big bill.
We have used Insurance For Car Hire in the past several times and the one small claim we had was paid promptly.

I was 72 when last I hired in 2022/23 and that wasn't an issue.
