Re: After 5 years in NZ
Though I see that the surfers are making the most of the waves in Cornwall . I dunno, what with hurricane force winds and earthquakes the UK is becoming more like NZ every day
I hear that the UK government is cutting back on the 4 year "granparent" visas it grants to Kiwis, hum.....not going to do much for the big OE is it?

No, but as everyone keeps pointing out, New Zealanders are already down the scale economically, so not so far to fall.
Lots of space around and better survival skills with a "make do and mend" culture.
Plenty of natural resources too if things do go t*ts-up.

Quote from another poster......I would say to people don't move to NZ for the climate or lifestyle unless you want a quiet life and not be bothered by feeling on the edge of the world (in every respect)!
There is no way in a million years we could have the kind of life we have here in Scotland or anywhere in Europe for that matter. Point is in 2005 £166,000 bought a really nice house in an even better neighbourhood, my wife earns twice the median salary in NZ..just as a nurse..they are fiscally very well rewarded here.
So nowhere in europe could see our money go sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo far and get us so much. The weather is miles better than Scotland here in the Manawatu, it never gets really cold and if you want some superb 3000mt skiing its only 2.5 hours away.
For us life could be no better anywhere else in thew world as a family who rely on one nurses income. We have found our personal nirvana. But obviously it is just that, ours and personal, most people hate Palmerston North, we just happen to be very, very happy here. Never wanted much in life, never expected much..but I have ended up with way more than my dreams and expectations.

Re: After 5 years in NZ
Its been said before and no doubt will be said again, and for good reason. The isolation is the most defining thing about NZ. Many of the features that successful immigrants like most about the place stem from that isolation, and the flipside is that many who don't end up staying give reasons again stemming from the countries isolation.
Just my 4.9 cents worth.
ps. the word "boring" is highly subjective...it is a gross generalisation to try to paint Europe as less boring than NZ, although it is fair to say that some people will find it that way.

In a nutshell,
Some folk are happy to raise sheep
Other folk want to plug into a global economy
Let's face it, you asked the question why ther is such a hoon problem in NZ
If you asked the hoons they will tell that there is nothing for them to do in NZ
When raising sheep becomes a hit on MTV NZ will be a happening place

There's not a lot you can do without a good supply of water either.
We could send some over along with the oil.
Yes, we're exporting oil to Australia now.
So next time you fill-er-up, you'll have a little bit of NZ in your tank.

Re: After 5 years in NZ
There have been a few posts on the thread referring to the future.
You being a teacher should agree that there is no bigger investment for the future than the youth.
They are the future
Perhaps it is really quite simple, a lack of public transport
