Yes, I meant house prices. I think I've seen every Yorkshire and Cumbria house on Rightmove for the last 6 months (it's become a bit of an obsession) So far I have found the houses I like in Settle to be generally less expensive than the ones I like in Skipton - not by tons though.

But Settle's main advantage would be its centrality for us. My family is now in Cumbria and with friends and family in Manchester, Leeds and Bradford, Settle is equi-distant from everyone.

Commuting isn't an issue for us as we both work from home.

Haven't ruled out Skipton though (although the Streetview of that house in Settle was pretty compelling!)

Cumbria is even better value for property as long as you stay away from the nuclear facility at Sellafield and don't eat the glow in the dark Morecambe bay shrimps. I am from Leeds and am living in Malvern, Worcestershire at the moment. To be honest, I prefer it down here because it is as much as 6C warmer on many days with less rain and is in a more central part of the country. Of course, it is horses for courses regarding location but I find the weather preferable. The further you get into the North West, the weather can become quite miserable.

You know the funny thing is that if it was totally up to me and no one else to consider, I'd move to a cottage in Swaledale with no neighbors. Now that would be a change!

Blarghhh, no,Sally, I have to be within an easy drive from supermarkets, cinemas,restaurants etc. All this splendid isolation stuff is no good for me!
I am starting to notice "landscape porn" recently, though. Have you seen "The Trip", a BBC series with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan travelling around the restaurants of the Lake District and North Yorkshire? It`s unbelievably beautiful to look at!

Jemima55, I LOVED that show. So funny We're going to the Lakes and the Dales in September and we plan to check out some of those places they went - although I doubt we'll be eating there at the prices they paid!

that house in Settle is a friend of mines old house (they aren't current vendors) It is indeed a beautiful view looking down to the rugby pitch at the bottom of the hill. It is also on the main road into Settle and the whole time i was living there that road was the subject of many many council debates about the vast numbers of trucks that rumble through there every day constantly. It may have changed now but would definately be worth checking out before you buy.

this house is in a much better location in Upper Settle. Away from all the main roads but easy walk to shops and schools. Whats your price range?

None of this matters anyway because it will be a few years before we go, and we'll probably rent at first so we can decide where to live - but it's fun looking!

When buying in the UK, it is worth looking at the Energy Performance Certificate published at the foot of the individual property descriptions. I never thought anything about it until I moved back to the UK and into the house we are currently renting. Basically, it is a piece of junk built in 1979 with little or no insulation and we get rather large heating bills during the winter. Having lived here for a while, there is no way I would buy a house like this.

Good point. There's no such thing here and when we bought this old house we had no idea that our utility bills would average $700 a month (and get over $1,000 in the winter). It is madness.

Wow, I paid 80 pounds for the worst month here (December) and I thought that was bad. But then again, I am a cheap Yorkshireman.
