I'd be thinking of Lancashire and the Lake District. Plenty of mountains, but also very pretty and doesn't have that "barren" feel that some of the Highlands can. And still far enough away from Liverpool!

I moved to Chester after I got married...Cheshire is nice. I would move back to Cheshire in a heartbeat. Convenient for N Wales, Lake District, Manchester etc.

A lot has been done to Liverpool to smarten the city up in the last decade. Some of the nicest people I have ever met are Scousers.

I lived there myself for a while, a great place and vibrant city. Unlike some, mentioning no Horaces, I would not be averse to living there again, .... I was only reflecting an earlier sentiment that (the OP?) didn't want to be too close to Liverpool.
