I was actually responding to Post #2 about the car scam ... not sure a similar scam exists for housing (but wouldn't be surprised).

No, I have a strict policy: never before 10 a.m. (except Christmas Day).

Poster #2 raised the subject of car scams, and I was responding to ... oh, never mind, I know what I meant even if no-one else did ...

No-one deserves to get robbed but some people don't get a lot of sympathy from me in these situations.
It was quite common in motorbike circles some years ago, especially after the 916 was launched. Sellers didn't want prospective buyers knowing where they lived (where the bike was stored). my friend ran/runs a specialist motorbike race spares business and he used to say virtually all of the client with high end bikes use their company as a delivery address.

But yeah, the 'bargain' priced vehicles and car park meetings have scams written all over them.

Yeah but which time zone do you use?

I got what you were saying sweety, I'm not sure about the media attention for these scams back home in the UK, but I know here in the US it is on the telly all the time. The 'Nigeria' or South African' connection seem to be the key word, I cannot believe anyone in the US hasn't heard of these scams by now, yet people are still falling for them...it's beyond me

i had heard all about the scams asking for bank details to deposit huge amounts of money into your account and similar stuff, when i was in Australia. Not heard anything about this type of scam on house rentals.
The thing is, it is not savvie people like us who will get caught out, its the more vulnerable they prey on. There are plenty of people out there who, for one reason or another (mental health issues, learning difficulties etc etc), who would fall for it through no fault of their own. Not everyone is like us, and its these people they rely on to outwit

That may be true to a certain extent, I agree that if these are the kind of people that are being scammed it's sad, but it's also the greedy, always after a quick bargain, cheapskates that fall for them too, you just cannot convince some people that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

It is sooooooooooo obviously another slant on previous Nigerian scams. DO NOT fall for it!
This is the first time i have come across this happening in the rental property market. Maybe they have had to broaden theirs ets due to people catching onto their other scams.

As with most things in life, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!!
One would have to be an utter brainless moron to reply to this. Just read it, enjoy the patheticness of it, have a laugh and move on. It really does not need a warning.

Here's a similar one I just received via emailfrom Gumtree.. from Pastor Collins

Thanks for the interest you have in my flat its well furnished. My flat is still available for the said period and you can rent my flat as long as you pay your rent at when due. Here are the necessary things you need to know about the rent and deposit.
Rent : £ 130.00 pw
Minimum Stay : 1 month Security Deposit: £ 500.00 (Returnable at the end of a week stay in my flat) Utility bills inclusive ( water, gas, council tax, TV license and wireless Internet) Utility Cost : £ 0.00 pcm

I want you to understand that a lot people who wants the landlord to retain the flat before arriving to London has disappointed the landlords in many ways.

1.Some outside tenants do not have the money to pay the rent and yet they dis-stop the the landlord to arrange a viewing with their friend or relative who are in London.

2.Also some do not meet up with the appointments which has led to the dismissal of some landlords in office by there employees.

Therefore,it has been resolved that a willing and serious outside tenants should be able to make a transfer to the name of the person coming to view the flat on his or her behalf, which a confirmation will be made on the transfer done to check if he or she is capable of paying the rent before arranging for a viewing or to retain the flat till your arrival and also stop other people from viewing the flat.

Please note that the transfer would have to be done through western union or money gram post office from where you are to UK so that it can be checked online before you or your partner picks up the money. Please note that any money sent to your partner can as well be picked back by your self after it has been confirmed on the internet website of western union or money gram post office.

Please note that the cost of transfer is refundable to you when you come for viewing.Once the transfer is done to the UK,you will only need to call me so i can have it forwarded to my lawyer to make a check if truly the money is there in the UK western union or money gram post office website internet. of transfer.Kindly reply for any further information......07024030588 and i will like to know where you are coming from to stay in my flat.

Regards,
Pastor Collins.

It is worthwhile giving a warning about such things. My partners niece lost money being conned online by similar to this, and she's no moron!

If it makes one person aware that wasn't before then it's worth it IMHO

When I was looking for flat to rent, placed ad in Gumtree Glasgow. I had one reply that supplied me with pictures that were so obviously taken from a magazine it was funny. This and a few other were very similiar in style to yours. I did let Gumtree know, not sure if anything can really be done though.
