Yes, my husband is from Harrogate (I am the USC). He is actually heading over there on Saturday (hasn't been over there since Nov. 2007). I'm staying here due to the high cost of tickets and me only having a part-time job right now.

Wish I was heading over on Saturday....sigh. Anyway, yes tickets are pretty expensive. Did you spend much time there?

Yeah, it's standard around here and up in Maine too...bit daft, but that's what they're used to I guess.
Same with the whole bagging thing being a bit daft, sure it's lovely if the queues aren't massive and there's a spare teller to help out and bag, or if someone has their hands full with a load of kids etc, but generally, I'd much rather bag myself and have more tills open than wait around in a queue for ages.

I have been over there about 7 times; never lived there though. My husbnad and I dated internationally while we were "courting". Then we did the K-1 visa and he's been over here in the US since 2003. Have a nice weekend!
Apologies for thread hijacking.

That's barbaric.
When I don't feel well at work I just lie down on the floor. Nobody can stop me.

It's nothing new. As a student, I worked in Asda back in Blighty. This was in the 90s. Our shop didn't give the cashiers seats either, and we only got one twenty minute break in a seven hour shift.

Re: Supermarket Cashiers
Sitting while working is seen as a sign of laziness in the US. So anyone working in a job where they are dealing with customers it's even worse because the company wants to put on a perfect visual to a customer that says they are hard working. It's simply a different cultural value. A perfect example is the old saying "time to lean is time to clean" that you hear in many entry level jobs.

I have to stand all day/night and don't get any breaks.
They get away with it because it is an "exempt position" as I am often alone and have noone to cover.
If I want to pee and it's the weekend/evening and noone is here to watch the desk, I have to put up a sign saying "helping a guest, back in a minute" and run like mad to the loo, then rush back to usually find someone slamming their hand on the desk repeatedly like they've been waiting for an hour
