hi
i know from looking at these threads that a lot of you are good at giving links to various news articles or statistics.....so i wondered if anyone actually knew of how many who emigrate to oz, how many actually return to the uk and within what time period? also the stats for ping pongers.
its just lately i seem to keep meeting people going back to the uk after a short period of time (maybe i attract them?!) and would be interested to know if this was becomming more common or it just happens to be where i am Perth northern suburbs)
what do youy reckon is about the norm time to stay in oz before deciding its not for you? just interested as no idea...

Once people have been here a few years many seem to want to go back but cant, lives have moved on, finances have changed, kids have been educated under a different system etc, think thats why it seems a lot who go back bail out the first few years.

http://www.immi.gov.au/statistics/stat_info/index.htm
If that doesn't work, then go to www.immi.gov.au
then down the LHS, click on Information & contact details
then click Research & Statistics
then click Statistics
then click Statistical Information
then click Overseas Arrivals and Departures tables
then....if you can interpret any of what's written there then let us know!!!
Who was it that said they did Statistics???
Anyhow, as the previous poster said many people leave as aussies, and it depends what you tick on your departure card on leaving the country. It gives you a choice of "Australian citizen leaving temporarily" or "Australian citizen leaving permanently". So those leaving permanently may have ticked the temporarily option!
All just meaningless statistics anyway!!!

Surprising figures Kendodd, if I'm reading correctly then more than half permanent settlers eventually leave Australia. I guess its not all beach and bar be que's eh!

its odd - i looked at the same question on the "poms in perth" website and the editor replied...
Of all "Poms" who arrive in AUSTRALIA (as a whole) - some 60% return to the UK
Of the 60% that return to the UK, some 90% come back to OZ
That's how it's been for 25 years
that would mean that only 6% of people return to the uk for good. i wouldnt of thought the figure wouldve been that low at all. x

You've got to decide what's right for you and your family, don't think about the stats, just think what's important to you.
Don't let other people's decisions influence whether you stay or go!
You might well be in the 6%, I find that 90% hard to believe though, where do they get that from???? Again, isn't that just someone's opinion? What is it backed up by?
I know 3 or 4 people in the UK who have spent time here, they are all happy back home and doing well for themselves - they don't regret leaving Australia and don't give it a moment's thought! Similarly, I know people here who wouldn't dream of moving back!
It's whatever floats your boat!

The blokes usually are fine. I've only met 2 blokes that didn't wanna stay and one was originally from Newmarket, like you!

I would agree Kendodd I also think the figure of 6% ambitious.

For the period 1999 - 2003 - British citizens only
People who left Oz for UK 74,300
People who left UK for Oz 158,900
For non British citizens only during 1999 - 2003 the figures are
People who left Oz for UK 125,100
People who left UK for Oz 83,200
Australia is both the number 1 migrant and in-migrant country to the UK.
Funny non Brits seem to like the UK more than Brits.
Considering all countries not Oz only; it doesn't show how long people stay in the country but does state some figures based on 2 to 3 year results. Interestingly it states migrants that arrive in the UK are generally younger and better qualified than migrants who are leaving the UK perhaps this is because it's more common to retire abroad (Spain springs to mind). The biggest single group of migrants are workers which also makes sense and might explain why you meet so many people returning as most international companies employ ex-pats on fairly short contracts 1 to 3 years (This is my experience anyway).
