Re: Spring coming early again.
Couldn't you plant up a pergola with something opaque? Sitting under a good one is like having the fridge door open!

I could not afford air-con and would just lie in a bath of cold water with a tinny. |
Re: Spring coming early again.
Beats sitting outside in a Brit summer, clutching a hot water bottle!

I'm with backhomeatlast on this one, Perth in summer is stifling, I'm a keen cyclist and you would think that to get out in the sun would be a dream but when you've got 40 odd degrees to cope with it's no fun. Even with a sea breeze it still feels like riding against a giant hairdrier set on HOT. Give me the English countryside in the spring, summer & autumn anytime. |

Re: Spring coming early again.
This summer is the first summer I've really struggled here. It's been so hot and the humidity is getting to me lately. It used to be a dry heat, so dunno what's happening with that?
Getting sick of the kids refusing to go outside to play as it's so hot. Getting sick of having to sit under our pergola to watch them in the pool; I spend and hour battling flies and the heat....a double whammy...joyful! It makes me laugh when Aussiewannabe's ask about the flies on the other forums and they get told "Oh, they're annoying but they're only about for Nov/Dec." WHAT  a load of cobblers. We are still getting swarms of the little f***ers and it's driving us mental. I moaned about the weather in the UK, I think it's a British trait. It's inbred. Won't do it anymore after living in this sauna. |

Re: Spring coming early again.
I cringe when i read 'soon to be expats' going on about their move to OZ, better life-style for the kids, more outdoor things to do, the life-style, the life-style, the damn life-style:frown:
Even those i know who love it here don't go out for months because of the heat and the flies. Some people need educating. Life-style...blahhhhhhhhhhh |

we have been very grateful for aircon, but weekends in all through summer when you have two boys is hell! We really thought wed do so much more as weather is more predictable. Between 11 and 3 you should stay in the shade.....as sun is v damaging. Also really have craved for kicking piles of leaves, splashing in puddles and having rain drop races down the window!! Sad cow that I am!: |

It also gets hotter as the day goes on here, not like Europe at all! Bike riding in giant hairdryer is no fun at all, tried it a few times, to get into the spirit of things, do the activites with the boys to be a good sport, a cool mum whatever..... My five year old actually got excited when it rained today!! As does most of Aus when it rains. Been wondering of late why Aus wants so many people to move here when water supplies so low.......surely not a good idea? |

I agree!!! We have the hottest New Year recorded in Victoria this year. 40+ is v hot!! Amazing how much energy it takes to move! Too hot for beach, too hot to fish. The place was like bloody ghost town! Then when you do get cooler days, you get piffed off with the flies!!!!

No you are not, if it is cold you can wrap up and get warm on a walk or bike ride, but when it is to hot you can do nothing:mad: and the bloody flies drive you mad, I once counted 34 on my salad:confused:
You realise how much of a problem it is and not seasonal(nov and dec as some suggest!) when you see the fly spray has more shelf space in the supermarket than BEANS!!!! Only in Aus!! Cant wait to go to Sainsburys! And looking forward to wearing my clothes again......flip flops in every colour doesnt quite do it for me!! or should i say thongs?! |

Re: Spring coming early again.
It has been so hot and humid here today it has made us both feel physically ill. The only part of the house without aircon is our bathroom, and just walking into it is like hitting a thick fuggy wall.
We are just amazed at the locals out working - full sleeves, hats, boots, the lot. I know they have grown up with it but I am still in awe. Still, four/five showers a day seems to do the trick - and we do try and get out and have lives rather than hide behind the aircon, but you really do feel drained by the end of it, and wonder why you bothered. Believe me, I had no idea quite how bad it can get and the mere thought of frost/snow is just heaven. We currently have a massive thunderstorm, so it should clear the air - only trouble is, they all seem to come with powercuts:p Ah, an english spring......... A xx |
