Can any one recomend a firm in Nelson for shipping back to UK-I'm thinking a 40ft as i intend to put in 2 trucks in Toyota hilux surf & a suzuki jeep + house hold goods (both over 10 years old--so I dont think there should be much problems?--a guy on another thread mentioned $4000--it sounds a lot cheaper than it cost to come with only 20ft--I've contacted Crown for a qoute--but could do with a few more names-- I'd like to be able to pack it myself--any one done this before?

Just started the process myself. Putting the wife's Micra in the container and shipping my X-Trail back a couple of months before filled with clothes/bedding/kitchen stuff so when we arrive we can use it in a rental before buying. It was expensive when we got here hiring cars and buying this sort of stuff before our container came. Can borrow a car here until the move.

Taking the cars back (2 years old) as it's a bugger selling second hand and they are worth a lot more in the UK. Don't want to lug two bags each through LA again as we want to travel via Oz and Borneo on the way back.

Getting quotes from Crown, Conroys, NZ Vanlines, Efficient Removals. Did get other recommendations such as Planetmove but we are moving into a rental when we sell the house as we don't fancy a double Winter whammy and hope to see the parts of NZ we haven't seen yet. Dog is waiting for her passport too.

Interesting thread, we too are thinking of shipping back an X Trail if we go, can anyone give a brief rundown of what on earth are the costs, paperwork, hassle involved.

Going back for now, the time is not right,We still have property & a business in UK--been self employed all my life--a bit spoilt on the money front --dont get me wrong dident earn a fortune,but I worked hard for 2 to 3 days & made a wage, over here if I worked 60 hrs a week for a firm & (I tried it) there no room to save anything,talked to lots of locals ( been over almost a year this time) its the same for most of them,the reality is if a working class kiwi wants to save to buy a home--they go to UK or Aus for a few years--so I'm taking a leaf out of their book & doing the same--we will be back, NZ is the place for me--I just wish I'd come 25 years ago--will come back when $ drops & land prices drop--came now before the kids started breeding in UK (17 & 18) but they will find it harder to make a living over here than UK, If we stay here I'll finish up supporting them for ever--my daughters collage course would have left her $20,000 in debt--UK its 300 pounds

Lots of people talk about NZ lifestyle--but its hard to enjoy a lifestyle with no money in your pocket--ask a Kiwi

I am not trying to spoil any ones dream--these are my opinions--based on living in Nelson--it is well known that wages are bad around here--sunshine dollars

Likewise the money is an issue with us though must admit we do not work as hard in NZ as we did in the UK, but earnt three times the amount. Could get promotion but the management structure in healthcare is pants and nepotism is rife anyway. Not much of a cash increase comes with promotion in nursing so why bother for the grief. We're lucky to have a smallish mortgage but still very little expendable income and not used to eeking out week to week. We both earn in the mid $20s an hour and I know folk on $14 an hour and trades people on $18.

However our main reason is family (sick relatives) & friends. After not being homesick for the first two years we are now. Not for the UK but for friends and family and work opportunities (didn't think I'd care but.....). Must admit whilst it is lovely here am a bit bored and life does just seem to pass by.

Haven't got a quote for the X-trail but about £1500 from UK to NZ so hopefully similar. Need to put rear fogs and a milometer strip on the speedometer. Here are some websites. Sorry very early in the researchmyself:

My family and I are also trying to nut out whether to stay or not, Must admit I would like to go home now but wife wants to stay, I think (we have been here 5 years) kids also not keen on going home. We seem to come to the same conclusion that you people have that its tough to make ends meet and the geographical location makes it thard to keep those pangs for family and friends at bay.

Had a great time here and came when the dollar was low and houses relatively cheap so at this current climate we could get home. We also have to wait for our hairy friends rabies jab to take so roll on 6 months, hopefully the house will still hold its value by then.

Has any one contemplated doing the paperwork them selves--on shipping?
Maersk-0800 623 775 qouted me in USD $1976 last week shipping from Nelson to felixstow for a 40ft container--just over 1000 pounds they did add that they prefer that the order come through a agent --so that the paperwork would be ok, Crown rang this morning qouted $16,000 NZD :scared: Nelson to Leeds--I told them basically P****** ( had got a qoute fron Cosco of NZD$5,100 the day before) Crown just rang back with another price NZD$10,000--I retold them to qoute to Felixstow--and I told them cosco price & what Maersk were charging for shipping--So I'll wait & see---but I would love to cut them all out of the loop--I'm sick of being scammed because I'm Engish ---comparing Crowns orriginal qoute to Maersks that would be approx NZD$13,000 difference,- transport from Felixstow to leeds

We are also sending back a Newfoundland dog & three cats --Qouted NZD$8,000 so far--any tips?

Holy S**t, $8000 for the dog, I think this is going to be an expensive trip back to blighty, better sort the wifes cat out I think, just take the dog.

I was quoted about $4300 + vets bills for the Labrador with Dogtainers. Shocking price. Imagine the holiday you could have on that. $8000 seems okay for your crew. Am asking the transport companys to quote for the dog too.

Paid £2000 in 2003 for the mut to come out here!!

I'm getting three quotes so I will get back to you with prices though ours is complex as we are going into rental first - more expensive for the bloody dog whilst she gets her passport.

Hi guys, we used Conroys to head back from Bay of Plenty and Dogtainers out of Auckland for our dog. These two companies were the cheapest by far and the service from both was out of this world. Our dog to come back was $3800 with Dogtainers plus $700 for his pet passport, then £400 for the shuttle up to Glasgow... the last bit I felt was a total rip off!!!!!!!!

Dont know what the weather is like down under this now but by god Glasgow is bloody boiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's freezing. Frosty in the mornings. Glad to see the back of these freezing houses - and mines brand new with heat pumps etc.

Just to let you know the price I was qouted orriginally from Maersk was for a 20 ft container Ive got a fixed price( 30 days) of $3847 USD (2,117 pounds) for a 40 ft container From Nelson to Felixstow I have 4 to 5 days to load it my self, They would arange transport from Felixstow to leeds for 420 pounds but I'm going to do it myself, been to NZ customs they said its easy so I'm doing it myself
