I can't comment on costs but with the cost of cars, especially secondhand cars in the UK I wouldnt bother to be honest.

Re: Shipping back car
We have 2 (oldish) cars on the high seas NZ to UK right now. Depending on how easy/difficult it is to get them on the road in UK with/without modifications, it may prove to have been more trouble than it is worth. I'll let you know how it pans out.
It takes 3 months by 'roll on roll off' ferry from Auckland to Southampton so we have borrowed a car from a relative in the meantime.

Re: Shipping back car
If I do return, I had considered shipping my Smart car from the US to the Uk, however truthfully, looking at prices to replace it on Autotrader.co.uk it would be cheaper to sell it and then replace it brand new than it would to ship. I think it is worth shipping a car if you have something special, but your regular every day runabout isn't worth it. Particularly when more efficient models are on offer in the UK. Plus the price of lightly used cars in the Uk - low miles, 2 or 3 years old are so cheap compared to the US.
