We were there ones (2005) for holidays and really existed about the history, culture and beautiful landscape. But holidays are different from working and living in another country. We read several articles about living quality and although the UK has a low unemployement rate the living quality in the uk is rated lower than in Germany! Has someone made experiences in Scotland? How is the work life balance, the cost of living or why in hell has the uk a lower living quality than Germany and is Scotland different from the rest of the uk regarding the living quality? If yes, where are the differences? How easy is it to get a job in the finance or software developing area there? Thanking in advance. Best Regards Antje & Basti I am from Scotland and never ever thought I'd hear myself saying this but I love the place! I miss it like mad and am thinking of going back. I've lived and worked in both Glasgow and Edinburgh and in between the two cities all of which I loved. House prices have risen since we left but show me in the world where house prices haven't risen? You will find a house that suits your budget I'm sure whether it be in and around the cities or in the suburbs. It depends what you want. Edinburgh is a fab city. Geared up for the tourists and more expensive to live in but we found it harder to make new friends there but it is a more transient city. Glasgow is an excellent city too with loads of wonderful architecture, museums, fabulous nightlife  , restaurants and the best shopping experience outside of London! Easier to make friends there the people are much more welcoming and friendlier by far.The west of the city is very expensive to buy in as are some areas of the North and South but there are affordable places too so don't be put off. Moving out east towards Edinburgh is more affordable and transport is easy enough to get you in and out of either city for work even though people moan about it. RE work - there are jobs for software developers and in finance. Scotland has some wonderful financial services and banking institutions in both cities with the Royal Bank's HQ in Edinburgh and Scottish Widows based there too. Try www.s1jobs.com and also www.rightmove.co.uk for houses. For Edinburgh housing also try www.espc.co.uk and in Galsgow www.gspc.co.uk Goodluck and I hope you settle well into Scotland! The people are fab! |

There are so many beautiful houses around, but most people seems to have no pride in the appearers of their house or garden... There is one thing you would notice in Germany..no rubbish around in residential areas...lovely looked after front gardens and the window decorations are really nice...You have to go ones in a German florist..its gorgeous what they all sell..you just dont find it here... Really a shame..it could be so nice were I live.. |

Funny thing is they were all younger people (we are all in our 40s) and none of us act this way. But it just reminds you that the UK should be better. More people travel now and see other countries so why don't we as a nation take more pride. Been to NZ,USA, Canada as well and they all put us to shame in my view.

Re: Scotland
Why on earth would you want to go drinking in Muirhouse, Westerhailes or Sighthill?!!
With regards to Edinburgh i would suggest that one of the good things about it, is that the bad parts are quite out of the way, with the exeption of Dumbidykes, but even that area is not that bad and will probably get knocked down soon. You really have to go quite a way out of the centre to get to the schemes, so its not like you are going to accidentally walk into them. Every city has its bade areas, i would prefer this arrangement than some other city's i have been to where the bad areas are almost on top of the regular areas. |

Sighthill, Morden, Wester Hailes, real Leith, Granton, Pilton, Muirhouse, Lochend etc etc etc. Dumbiedykes will not get knocked down because of the amount of ex-council homes that have been bought by their tenants. The point of the post was that the reality of living is such a cosmospolitan city is often quite different from that which visitors witness. No-one is suggesting that an evening in Pilton would necessarily be the best idea for a stranger. |
