Default Schoolboys get detention for refusing to pray to Allah!

OK, I know, it's in the Daily Fail, but with the UK's most senior judge AND the Archbishop of Canterbury advocating some use of Sharia law in the UK....I'm just a tad nervous considering we're looking at going back with our kids. The anti-wrinkle cream may not be working, but I've no intentions of taking to wearing a burka just yet!

Ezzie......if you don't want to go back then don't go back.

It seem's that you are simply looking for reasons not to.

The Daily Mail is known for it's misleading, anti labour govt. and anti migrant views. If you choose to believe the nonsense they print then, perhaps you should stay where you are.

I have a house in Brisbane and one in the UK.....I can see very little difference between the two counties.

It was a comment put up for discussion. I'm not so narrow-minded as to make a decision based on one issue. If I didn't want to go back...then I wouldn't and I wouldn't be posting in this section. But we do want to go back and I would imagine that many others who are planning to return are concerned about similar issues. Hence the post.

I did actually refer to it as 'The Daily Fail' in my post so obviously I'm awared of it's bias. However, the statements issued by Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips and Dr Rowan Williams are valid no matter which paper in which they appear.

I'm sure there's many who would be in the position to comment on whether this is a 'beat-up' or whether there is real concern in the UK as to the possibility of the UK having its own laws eroded and eventually usurped.

It makes a great story, doesn't it? Sells papers, I'm sure.

(BTW, that other article about Sharia Law was very specific if one read down. "So far as the law is concerned, those who live in this country are governed by English and Welsh law and subject to the jurisdiction of the English and Welsh courts."

No suggestion of it being "law." Just incorporating some social customs. As the article also pointed out, it's already happening with Jewish customs. In Canada, we're incorporating First Nations customs, as we should.)

The thing is, the headline could have been, "What Nutty Teachers We Have These Days!" with the emphasis on how some teachers need to get a brain, but it wouldn't have sold as many papers.

There are always teachers everywhere, especially young ones, who'll come up with a cool new idea of how to enhance lessons, make them more real etc which is completely, utterly stupid. It usually only happens once before someone opens their brains up to the air a bit.

It's clear even from the Mail that this wasn't curriculum. That it was just a crazy idea, but I hope the boys get an apology, and perhaps even commendation, and that principal is a wuss.

t's wrong all around to have non-believers partaking in religious ceremonies. Learning about them, yes. But not doing. Is he or she going to be having them all take the host, to teach them about Roman Catholicism. Heck. Don't let that teacher know about circumcision!!!!!

I agree. It's just the daily fail doing what it does worst. Ignore it!

I'm sure that the truth is the teacher concerned most probably had good intentions and just got a bit carried away. I'm sure if that teacher was asked about his/her opinion on all of this, he/she would agree that it's wrong to force children to participate in another religeon, but that probably wasn't the way they saw it at the time.

Personally I think schools should not teach anything about religeon of any kind, let parents do that if they must. I think it would be much more helpful in this day and age for schools to teach kids about values like respect, citizenship, the law, honesty, responsibility and so forth.

What should the headline for this story have been?

No, actually,we shouldn't. If you personally choose to, that is just fine, but I will not (and have not) agreed to participate in FN ceremonies or customs. I find the notion that we "should" incorporate "customs" on an obligatory basis quite offensive.

Well I would have to assume that the basic facts of that story are probably true, by the sound of it. On that basis I would say that it is just another case of exreme political correctness which, sadly, is not unique to Britain and is happening very much here in Australia, and I'm sure in the USA and other parts of the world.

It is actually pathetic and childish behaviour when you really step back and look at it objectively.

This is the year 2008, not 1608. Why on earth is ANYONE still subscribing to medieval theories about reincarnation and punishment for 'sins' in past lives? Why on earth should any child be forced, or even encouraged, to learn such complete rubbish at school these days?

It really is, as I said, childish and pathetic!

It was in the Daily Telegraph as well?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2247...llah'.html

and the Daily Express (although I suppose the DE is not much different from the DM)

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...-pray-to-Allah

So get your burka ready just in case!

I'm fairly sure that, once again, the whole story has been taken completely out of context by the media.

The real situation probably was nowhere near as bad as that story makes it sound.

probably going a bit off topic but I thought that God and Allah were the same but in a different language. If so then I agree I would never pray in a different way than I do now, nor expect any other religion to do so.

I don't know what God you pray to but the one I pray to doesn't condone child marriage, genital mutilation, honour killing or jihad.

The one I pray to doesn't exist!

I do however respect peoples right to believe what they want to believe though, provided it does not pose any harm or threat to anyone else, or reasonably offend anyone.

Sir, I think you'll find that the one you are talking about is a prophet - not God and I'll await your quotes from the relavent tracts with interest.

FGM is not accepted by any religion. Genital mutation in males is practiced by all religions for health and religious reasons.

Jihad was started by the first crusade - in other words originates in England.

Your remarks are offesive. As are my thoughts but the latter remain unpublished.
